Lacey's Civil War Story
The Reverend Jonathon A. Deal was the eldest son of Jonathon and Nicaea Deal and was born near Fayetteville, NC on November 26, 1844. Reverend Deal enlisted in the Confederate army at the age of 16 in 1861, as a drummer. In 1863 he was promoted to Corporal. In 1864 he was captured in Cold Harbor, Virginia on May 31. He was imprisioned at Point Lookout, Virginia. In November he was released in a prisioner exchange at Venus Point, Georgia. After the war, Mr. Deal studied for the Ministry at Trinity College in Hartford Connecticut. Many years after the war, Reverend Deal became interested in real estate in Franklin, and in 1891 he became partner in a real estate firm with a Mr. Stoner. Mr. Stoner ironically was that very Yankee soldier who had captured Deal during the war. Reverend Deal became chairman of the board of Education for Macon County, having been elected in 1899. The Reverend Deal was a circuit riding preacher which means he traveled from place to place to share his religious messages. The Reverend continued some  ministry until 1910, then he retired to Gainsville, Georgia. He passed away on May 6, 1928 and is buried at Woodland Cemetary in Franklin, along with his beloved wife Cornelia and sons.

This is the picture I found of  Reverend John Deal at the Franklin Historical Society.
