Welcome to 5th Grade
Introduction
Hi, My name is Janelle Watson and I will be your child's fifth grade teacher at Cullasaja Elementary. I have a bachelor's and a master's degree in elementary education from WCU and am National Board Certified in Intermediate Elementary Education.  School for students begins August 27 this year. I look forward to seeing everyone then.
Parent, Student, Teacher Communication
It seems like teachers need a note for just about everything. Please send a note with your child if there is a change in the way they are going home from school or if there has been an absence .If you would like to speak to me on the phone or in person you may leave a message in the office so I can return your call or set up an appointment. Or, you may send in a note with your child. I am always happy to explain anything you might have a question about or meet with you to discuss your child's progress.
If your child needs medication at school we must have a special form filled out before we can give the child any medication. A simple note is not enough in this case. This is a new school board policy developed from a legal standpoint. All medication at school needs to be handled through the office.
You may expect a note from me if your child has failed to complete an assignment, or has had more than minor behavior problems.  Behavior notes or calls will be handled as appropriate to the misbehavior. Possible consequences are writing sentences, loss of free time, loss of recess, or office visits.
Notes from the school office or about field trips, book orders, etc. will also be sent home with the child.
Class work and Homework
My policy on homework is to never send home something that the student hasn't had at least a few minutes in class to start. This is so I can make sure everyone is on the right track before they go home. Students are expected to fill out our agenda books last thing everyday.
In addition to daily assignments students will be expected to complete Morning Math first thing every morning.
We use two grading scales in the classroom. For practice assignments, journal entries, and other such work we use a check scale.
Check Plus= A-B Good work
Check= C-D Passing but could be better
Check Minus= Poor quality work
The other grading scale is for papers that were assigned for homework or to prove mastery of a skill. This grading scale is used across Macon County.
100-93=A
92-85=B
84-79=C
78-70=D
69-=F
Graded work will be returned to the student stapled together on Wednesdays. There is a header sheet on top that needs to be signed returned to school by Friday. If a student is absent they have one school day for every day they were absent to turn in the work they missed. For example if little Suzy missed Monday and Tuesday she would have Wednesday and Thursday to complete the work and should turn it in on Friday morning.
