This one starts with a ride from LeBeau, at the corner of La.10 and US 71, up wonderful scenic and winding La 361 to Goudeau. At Goudeau I had about all I could stand of wonderful scenic and winding La. 361 and decided to try to get into trouble on one of those roads that attempt to cross water systems from one main high road to another. This time I sought to cross the Spring River system between La.361 and La.107. These two main roads more or less run between the Lebeau/Morrow area and the Cottonport/Evergreen area. These rides are not about covering long distances, but covering distances completely. The next road was getting to the "complete" end of the exploration spectrum. I had not been on Spring Bayou Road and I had always wanted to even if I didn't know it existed. It was like being six on Chirstmas Eve. You never know what's next and that's the beauty of roads like Spring Bayou. |
Below is the whole thing. Going north exploring, going south, banzi on the Interstate. That way you're home for supper in LeBeau. No Fagan, I'm not recommending the truckstop restaurant there. You probably already have it critiqued and rated. |

Scary Road |

We had had a heavy rain the day before and I proceeded carefully with my new understanding of riding a top heavy road bike on slippery surfaces. Spring Bayou Rd. was pretty and in very good condition. |
The Bayou was typical Louisiana Pretty with cypress, birds and the works. |
The road forked and straight didn't look too good. I didn't even consider it. I would see the other end later. It's name is Scary Road. I'll have to add that one to the list of aptly named roads. |
Spring Bayou Rd ran into La.1180 and the opportunity to check out Scary Rd. presented itself, again. It started off fine but soon the long holes started and I clicked. Sure enough, the road I'd rejected was this one. I was smart twice and made a U turn. Too early in the day for a disaster. Disasters should be saved until sundown when the mosquitoes come out and there's no cell phone service and if there is, the wife just laughs at you. 1180 ran directly to 107. I had made the crossing and was headed to Mansura. |
Mansura is a historical spot. Just a light survey affirms that. |
If you'll stop at the numerous historical markers, including a Civil War one, that affirmation will be substantiated. |
It's a wonder how long those metal roofs last. |
"Cochon de Lait" litterly "milk pig " which put together in historical Cajun Frech, means "suckling pig". The act of having a "Couchon de Lait" is a pig slaughter where the pig is completely used. Food, soap and on and on. This is a family event and sometimes a neighborhood party. I got some of that info from a friend. I mentioned that I was doing a write up that included Mansura and that I had parked in the mayor's parking place to take this picture. She said that he's been ill. I asked how did she know. She said her husband's cousin was the mayor of Mansura and had been for a long time. So, if you're reading this Mayor Quibideaux, Priss said Hi. |
