Wildwing’s Promise

by Lizzie

(to the tune of “Man in Black” by Johnny Cash)

Well, you wonder why I always wear a Mask.

Why I don’t release the symbol of my task.

And why does my appearance

seem to have an angry tone?

Well, there’s a reason for the Mask that I have on.

I wear the Mask for the life I didn’t choose.

For the battle we can’t win and will not lose.

I wear it for the criminal

who has long paid for his crime;

He’s saved a hundred lives, including mine.

I wear the Mask for the one with hair of red,

Whose flight and weapon skills can knock ‘em dead.

And for the one of strength

who solves each conflict peacefully.

And the one whose strength is ingenuity.

And for the one who’s much more than a friend.

He is the one who’s my charge to defend.

I wear it for the one

who first used this Mask for sight.

I swear I heard him speak to me one night.

I wear it for a friend from days of old,

whose self-sacrifice and loss has left me cold.

I wear the Mask in mourning

for the lives we could have led,

But we wage war so far from home instead.

AND I WEAR IT FOR THE THOUSANDS WHO HAD DIED

BEFORE OUR SMALL RESISTANCE COULD ARISE.

I wear it for another hundred

thousand back at home

whose great losses left them shaken and alone.

Well, there’s things that never will be right, I know.

And things need changing anywhere you go.

But ‘til we start to make a move

that makes a few things right

I’ll never let this golden Mask turn white.

Oh, I’d love to leave my face bare everyday

And tell the world that everything’s okay.

But I’ll try to put that off

at least ‘til I complete my task.

‘Til things get better, I’ll still wear the Mask.
