Welcome to My Reed/Read/Reade Genie Page
As stated on my Home Page, I am adopted, but I know my birth parents.  I have been able to obtain my genealogy on my father's side from my own research and connecting with others in the family who were also researching.  A HUGE thank you goes out to Claire Louden who spent many hours and much effort putting together a wonderful book that was published entitled "Sprigs and Twigs of the Read Family Tree 1598-1996."
This line began in the States in Massachusetts.  They settled in Rowley (Essex Co.) MA.  The town  Rowley was originally known as Rogers' Plantation named for Rev. Ezekiel Rogers who was the spiritual leader of those who came over from Hull, England with him for religious reasons. An Act of Incorporation states "4th day of the 7th, 1639 - Mr. Rogers' Plantation shall be called Rowley."   The original settlers of Rowley arrived in 1637 on the ship JOHN.  In the "old country" they were weavers, carpenters, farmers, millers and herdsmen and continued those trades here.  According to the book "Wonder-Working Providence" the residents of Rowley
" . . . were the first people that set upon making cloth in this western world, for which end they built a fulling-mill, many of them having been clothiers in England."  It was the people of Rowley who first manufactured cloth in New England.  Due to the continued growth of Rowley there were expansion problems such as compulsory attendance at town meetings, church going, transportation of materials, school attendance, trade and a close-knit neighborhood.  The setting of territorial limits for Rowley created the establishment of the towns of Bradford, Boxford, Groveland, Haverhill, Merrimack and Georgetown.  The Merrimack River was used for transporting goods and helped with the settlement of this area.

Ok.  We now have to move on to another page to continue this line from Joshua Haseltine.
We have to get through all the "begots" to eventually get to the Read/Reed part of this early family history.
