  Bicycling

For a few years, I lived in Waltham, MA, and worked in Boston. I commuted to work on my bike every day (except when its raining) from April to October (daylight savings time).  I ride a 2004 Bianchi Eros.

I've ridden in the National MS Society's "Great Mass Getaway" several times.  This is a two day ride from Boston, MA, to Provincetown, MA to raise money to fight Multiple Sclerosis and for support for families affected by MS.  About 1000 riders travel the 150+ miles.  I enjoyed myself when I've ridden, and made some great friends during the ride.

Above is a photo of me and my bike, taken at one of the rest stops on the first day of the "Great Mass Getaway" in 2000.  As you can see, there are a few other cyclists in the background.  Click on it for a larger view...

I've was averaging over 2000 miles a year since I bought the Bianchi, until 2002, when I was in an accident involving a Ford Escort. I walked away, but the bike was wrecked and all the muscles in my shoulders were messed up. After physical therapy, I'm back to riding again! Now that I work too far away to commute to work, I go on 15-20 mile bike rides during my lunch hour during the week. Often, I will pull my son in a trailer while riding on bike trails.

Backpacking

I do quite a bit of hiking and backpacking during the summer.  For many summers, I spent time in the Adirondacks of New York (at a friends camp) and I would do day hikes in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

Above is a photo of me taking a break while ascending Mt Redfield in the High Peaks Region of the Adirondacks.  This mountain is 4606 feet at the summit, and there are no maintained trails on the mountain.  To get to the summit, you follow the stream which I am sitting in about halfway up, and then take a right and head straight for the summit.  Beautiful view from the top, but it isn't an easy hike.  The mountain in the background over my left shoulder is Algonquin, the 2nd highest peak in New York State.  Click on it for a larger view...

Live Steam & Model Engineering

I've been involved with Live Steam since I was 4 years old. I have a 3.5" gauge B&M pacific and a 4" scale steam tractor. I have built several stationary steam engines, hot air engines, and specialized tooling for my shop.

Model Railroads

I've been "playing with toy trains" for most of my life. I started out in HO, but now my model railroading is divided between 2 rail O scale, On3 and N scale. I model the Boston and Maine and British Prototype in both scales, and my narrow gauge modelling is mostly the EBT. But, there's exceptions to every rule, and I've got a pretty good variety of equipment.

Railfanning

Steam is King!  I rarely railfan modern railroading, but I've been known to ride and chase steam excursions all over the east coast.

Above is a photo I took of C&O 614 on the Moonda Viaduct in Salisbury Mills, NY in June of 1997.  Click on it for a larger view...
