Gar Pictures

Back around 2003, my family and I were up at Lake Wappapello to get our hair cut, and I noticed that the spillway was just teeming with gar, a type of fish that is well known for its rows of sharp, pointy teeth. (I'm reminded of Monty Python and the Holy Grail as I type "sharp, pointy teeth". lol) So, of course, having a curious mind, I come home and look up "gar" on Google, and I discover that there are many different kinds of gar. I find myself absolutely fascinated by "Alligator Gar". The alligator gar is by far the largest type of gar, growing up to over 300 pounds, and can reach lengths in excess of 10 feet. *The largest gator gar mount in Missouri may be the 8-foot, 3-inch 228-pound monster on display at the Hornersville Duck Club. The wall of Schindler's Tavern in New Hamburg sports a mounted alligator gar said to be 9 feet long. When caught in 1916, it weighed 180 pounds. (*information from Missouri Department of Conservation)

In early 2005, I talked with my cousin Greg, owner of Greg's Guide Service, who is an avid fisherman who holds many records in the area. He does not specifically fish for alligator gar, but says he did catch one in or near Poplar Bluff on Black River. He says that it was longer than the width of the cab of his truck. If he ever catches another, he promises to let me know, and I will be there with digital camera in hand to snap pictures.

Anyway, as stated, I am obsessed with these alligator gar, and I have collected several pictures from the internet. Click on a thumbnail to view full size image.
