January 7: Book Meeting in St. Louis The St. Louis chapter of JACL will discuss Barack Obama's book "Dreams from my Father" at Edie Quick's Residence. January 7, 14, 21, & 28: Taiko Beginner Classes in Cleveland, OH Taiko Beginner Classes will be offered for $50 at the Denison Avenue United Church of Christ, 9900 Denison Ave in Cleveland, OH. The classes take place from 3:00-5:00pm and are offered for individuals ages 12 and up. To register, please visit this website. January 10: Chicago Asian American Organizations Protest against the Memorialization of Mike North on Senn High School's field in Chicago, IL "This past summer, Chicago Asian American organizations banded together to confront Mike North about his usage of 'Chinaman' when describing Chicago Cubs pitcher, Jae Kuk Ryu. Mike North's clear lack of sincerity when apologizing on-air indicates that he is not worthy of having such an honor bestowed...Join us...as the Asian American community stands together in solidarity to make sure that the field will not carry Mike North's name." This event will occur at 6:30pm at Senn High School (5900 N. Glenwood Ave., Chicago, IL 60660, Rm. 115). January 20 & 27: ASC Community Mural Workshops in Chicago, IL The JASC invites you to participate in their interior mural project. Workshops feature stories from Nisei community leaders, youth activities, and information regarding the Chicago Japanese American experience. January 20: JACL Youth Committee Meeting in Chicago, IL The JACL Youth Committee will meet at 5414 N. Clark Street in Chicago, IL at 3pm. Come for a fun time-- food will be served. January 26: Chicago Premiere of an Award-Winning Documentary "ABDUCTION- The Megumi Yokota Story" will open at the Gene Siskel Film Center in Chicago, IL (164 North State Street; Ph: 312.846.2600). This film tells the story of a 13- year-old Japanese girl who was kidnapped by North Korean Spies. For more information, visit www.abductionfilm.com. January 28: JACL Hoosier Chapter hosts a Shinnenkai Party The Hoosier Chapter of JACL will host its New Year's party from 1-4pm at the Indiana Humanities Council (1500 N. Delaware St., Indianapolis). Ehren Watada, Civil Rights, and the Military in Chicago, ILL The Chicago Chapter of JACL is sponsoring this educational forum at 7:30pm at 5414 North Clark Street in Chicago. Feburary 10: JACL St. Louis Chapter's Annual Appreciation Dinner The St. Louis chapter of JACL will host its annual appreciation dinner this February. February 18: Day of Remembrance in Chicago, IL The Japanese American community in Chicago will commemorate the Day of Remembrance on February 19th at 2pm at the DeVry Institute (3300 N. Campbell Avenue, Chicago, ILL). JACL Midwest Director Bill Yoshino and 442nd veteran, Sam Ozaki, will give a subsequent presentation on February 19, 2007. February 25: JACL Chicago Chapter's Inagural Party The Chicago chapter of JACL will celebrate its inaugural at 12pm at Coletti's Restaurant (5707 N. Central Avenue in Chicago, ILL). The cost is $50 per person, and a cash bar will be available. The event features the swearing in of new board members, a speaker, and entertainment. February 25: JACL Chicago Youth Event The JACL youth group has planned an outing to watch a movie at 2:50pm at the Crown Theatres Village 18 (located at 7000 Carpenter Road; Skokie, IL 60077). Afterwards, the group will go to Buffalo Wild Wings (7020 Carpenter Road; Skokie, IL 60077). |
