Independent Reading Program
Grades 3-6

Dear Parents,

I would like to update you on the independent reading program.  The students are starting to respond to what they are reading instead of just summarizing.  Their writing fluency has noticeably improved.  Please see the schedule below to help your child determine when their journal is due.  An updated schedule for March- May will be sent home and posted at a later time. Thank you again for all your support in helping your child become a life long reader.  If you have  any questions or comments please feel free to contact me at 543-8515.

Remember your child's enjoyment reading should be at an independent reading level.  They should not need help with decoding or understanding the text.

There are three basic reading levels:

Independent Level - the student reads independently without assistance.

Instructional Level - the student makes some errors and requires instruction to benefit from reading.

Frustration Level
- text that is too difficult even with assistance and should be avoided because it offers no benefit to the reader.

Thank you,
Mary D'Errrico
