Entertainment: an Excuse to Kill | ||||||||||
by Matt Johnson | ||||||||||
I realize that I'm a few years behind the times in writing this, but I feel I must address it anyway: Columbine. After years of being the outcasts in school, two kids bring guns and bombs to school and kill and injury many of their fellow classmates and teachers. After killing themselves, everyone blames the tragedy on the music they listened to, the movies they watched, and the games they played. Me? I say that's bullshit. To quote from the comic Johnny the Homicidal Maniac: "Any pile of stunted growth unaware that entertainment is just that and nothing more, deserves to doom themselves to some dank cell, somewhere, for having been so stupid. Movies, books, T.V., music - they're all just entertainment, not guidebooks for damning yourself!" I see the irony in that comment coming from a book about a homicidal maniac. But, truer words about this situation have never been spoken. If it's not entertainment's fault, where does the blame lie? Simple. With the two bastards who shot up the school. Psychologically, they wouldn't have killed all those people if the school bullies hadn't picked on them. That is bullshit as well. I know many kids who were picked on as children and in high school. They didn't bring a gun to school. Other kids who are teased or picked on don't kill people. What do they do? They write books or plays. They work on their computers and one day design software that those same bullies will use everyday. They grow up and become the bosses of the bullies. But kill people? No, they don't do that. So, why did these two kids decide to kill people they've known since grade school? There are only two reasons I can see why they did this: 1. They're insane. No pussy-footing around it. They're crazy and NEEDED to be locked away. 2. They craved attention. They were probably the neglected child or they were upset that being the black-wearing goth type doesn't make you popular in high school. They wanted everybody to see them and pay attention to them. This seems like the most likely answer to me. Whatever the motive behind this travesty, these two kids are murderers and I feel happy and safer now that they're both burning in Hell. This is a national travisty, make no mistake about it. Sadly, other kids took this as an excuse to shoot people in vain attempts to become famous as well. I fear for the sanity of our great country if anything like this happens again. |
