I was born and raised on the prairie in north central South Dakota. As a young girl I loved the beauty of the prairie and all that it had to offer. The wildlife was so spectacular and truly every day was a new adventure for some one that liked the great out doors. The change of season is like no other. One minute it is calm and the sun is high in the sky and the next minute the wind can be blowing 40 miles per hour and the snow is flying. That is what made it all so exciting there was never time to be bored. I have lived here on the prairie for 49 years now and raised two sons with my husband of 30 years. Now that our sons are grown men and out on their own I feel a restlessness with in me and have turned to the prairie and the computer for a new adventure.
Four years ago my husband and I were driving home from a fishing trip and saw something dead on the road we stopped and low and behold it was a porcupine. I had always seen picutres of them and knew that they exsisted in some parts of South Dakota but I had never seen one before. I thought it was so beautiful and quite unique and thought there must be something that could be done with it to let that beauty live on. At the time I was starting to make jewelry with glass seed beads and decided that the quill of the porcupine would add a new beauty to the jewelry thus began The Quill and Feather. I also make jewelry and cards from the feathers of the Ringneck Rooster the State bird of South Dakota also called a Pheasant. This bird has beautiful plumage and adds exceptional beauty to anything.
To add some variety to my inventory I am now reading and learning about agate's and many different types of rocks and precious stone. I have started making broaches out of some of the different types of stones. This jewelry is quite a challenge as it takes a tremendous amount of time and patience to put it together. The thread is as fine as a human hair and the beads are very tiny too. In order to see to do this work I have to work under a magnifying lamp.
I hope you enjoy my web page and appreciate the beauty and the love that is put into each piece . I would love to have you sign my guest book.
