Mister Chairman,

The Daniel – Jeffers Post 247 is honored to submit Legionnaire Bob Ouellette for consideration as the Montgomery County Council Legionnaire of the Year.  Legionnaire Bob Ouellette has been selected as Legionnaire of the Year for Post 247.  Legionnaire Bob Ouellette serves on several committees on the Post, County and Department levels.

Bob is married to Cathy, the father of two children, Robert, Jr. and Joseph.  In addition to his family and American Legion he continues to support many other community activities. Bob was selected as a committee member and marching instructor for the Loudoun Border Guards Fife & Drum Corps.  He has been involved in the Boy Scouts of America, for the past 8 years and is currently an Assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 496 of Poolesville. In 1995, Bob earned the prestigious Wood Badge, the equivalent to the Ph.D. in Scouting. Bob has been assisting Cathy Ouellette, his wife and Becky Kuhn, his sister-in-law in running the Poolesville Day Bike Ride to benefit the Breast Cancer Fund for the past 10 years.

Legionnaire Bob Ouellette started his outstanding service as the Post’s Adjutant then two time Post Commander.  Bob’s outstanding potential was recognized by his selection to the National Legion College, where his skills on Post development and The American Legion were strengthened.  Legionnaire Bob’s duties have grown to include positions on the Department’s National Security Council, the County’s Internal Affairs Committee and the Post’s Children & Youth, and Chairman of our Sons of the American Legion Squadron, which was the first to achieve Four Star for 2002.

Legionnaire Ouellette has been an outstanding advocate for the American Legion; he has demonstrated this through his recruitment and has received many awards for membership such as the Gold Award for Membership and several National awards; Gold Brigade, seven Ray’s Aces Awards and Five Ric’s Retriever Pins, Give-Me-Five.  Legionnaire Ouellette has also been instrumental in chartering Sons of the American Legion Squadron, which has achieved Four Star Status and an American Legion Auxiliary Unit.

On a business trip to Germany, Bob met with several Post members residing there. After a few hours these members decided that they would form their own Post in Frankfurt Germany.  In addition to those Post members already there, Bob recruited eight more members for the Post.  If every veteran displayed the dedication to the cause that this gentleman does then our challenges would all be met and our futures would all be secure.

Under his guidance our Post has prospered beyond all expectations. We became a Four Star Post in 2001 and again in 2002, our membership roles have grown from 30 to over 140 in just a few short years ago! The local newspapers trumpet our praises and quote our Post officers. We have become, arguably, one the most active Posts in the Department.
Under Legionnaire Ouellette’s command the Post has received the Four Star Post Trophy, the Pershing Trophy, two Charles A. St. Clair Memorial Trophies for the Post’s work with the Special Olympics. A Judge’s Trophy at the State Convention was awarded for his innovative assembly of a marching unit in the parade at the American Legion Convention this summer. The very first SAL unit in our area was organized with his talents. And the Auxiliary for our Post will sign their Unit Charter in January!

Additionally, he has organized a color guard for transfers to Post Everlasting, complete with a bugler to render taps. He secured a drum and bugle corps for Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day services, and has personally arranged fund- raisers that have netted the Post thousands in revenue. And this gentleman is actively engaged in negotiations to secure a Post home in the town of Poolesville.

All of this would be more than enough to consider him for Legionnaire of the Year, but there is more!  This man hosted the first Oratorical Contest in Poolesville since 1988. The four participants from our Post were the only candidates in the area.

The daily actions of Legionnaire Bob Ouellette are in keeping with the beliefs of the American Legion, the best traditions of our military service and bring great credit upon himself, Post 247, the Montgomery County Council and Southern Maryland District.

For the Veteran!
