| "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." With these words begins the most important book ever written or that will ever be written. It is the Bible and it is the only method by which God reveals His will for man. The Bible is a collection of 66 books written by about 40 different authors over a span of about 1600 years. It is divided into two major divisions. These are the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament covers the period of history from creation to about 400 years before the birth of Christ. The New Testament covers the period from the birth of Christ until the end of the world. The Old Testament has 39 books and the New Testament has 27. The authors, who were men, did not write what ever they wanted. Instead they wrote as they were inspired to write by the Holy Spirit. "For all scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works." 2 Timothy 3:16-17. In this course we will examine the first book of the Bible which is called Genesis. The word Genesis means "beginning" The book of Genesis was written by Moses about 1600 years before the birth of Christ. It is the first book in a section of the Bible known as the Law. The law made up five different books, Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. The book of Genesis contains the account of creation and God's early dealings with man. The Bible does not set out proof of the existence of God. Instead it assumes it. It begins with the words "In the beginning God..." This indicates that God already existed. How long did God exist before creation? God always existed. He was never born as you and I were. He simply always was. The Bible says creation took six days.
