"Celeborn is one of the oldest legendary figures of Middle-Earth. Together with his wife he founded Lothlorien. After the Fellowship escaped from Moria they went to Lotlorien where they were led blindfolded to meet Galadriel and Celeborn. They stayed for some time in Lorien enjoying its amazing beauty. Without their leader Gandalf the Fellowship was not sure how to continue their journey from Lorien. It was Celeborn who suggested they take boats and go down the river Anduin. So he supplied them with the boats and other usefull equipment for their journey. Lady Galadriel also gave them very precious gifts to aid their efforts. After the War of the Ring Celeborn remained in Middle-earth, and founded the realm of East Lórien below the Narrows in the Wood of Greenleaves (Eryn Lasgalen). Eventually though he grew weary of his realm, and he departed and stayed for a little while with his grandsons Elladan and Elrohir in Rivendell. When he finally departed over sea it was with the last of the Noldor. This happened some time before the one hundredth and twentieth year of the Fourth Age "
'Sit now beside my chair, Frodo of the Shire!' said Celeborn. 'When all have come we will speak together'
One of the lesser-figures of Middle Earth, Celeborn makes only one appearance in The Fellowship of the Ring: the greeting of the Fellowship once it has reached the shores of Lothlórien at the side of his wife, the Lady Galadriel. As such, little is known of him even through Tolkien's later writings.
Celeborn came originally from the northern kingdom of Mirkwood. He fought in the War of the Rings in Middle Earth and eventually became a high lord in the counsel. He was wed to Galadriel in Dorianth and fled with her after the fall. Near to the beginning of the Third Age, Galadriel founded Lothlórien and there they settled, governing the people with wisdom and restraint.
Out of their union came a daughter, Celebrian, who in turn was wed to Elrond, keeper of the ring Vilya and Lord of Rivendell. For a time Celeborn was away from Lothlórien in Middle Earth, but eventually he returned to be with Galadriel. We glimpse him only once, when he descends the staircase on the arm of his wife to greet the Fellowship.
Celeborn's powers are nothing in comparison to those of Galadriel, whose ring Nenya has enabled her above all others capabilities beyond mere elf thought. In the film he plays a very minor role; in the books it is only a touch larger. He both deeply loves and respects his wife and values her opinion. As such, he plays merely a sideline in Lothlórien... the ruling of the Elves is left to the queen.
Lingering Thoughts:
Celeborn's respect for Galadriel and Nenya is a prime example of acceptance and security. A lesser elf (or man) might find fault being a step lower than his wife both in rank and power, but Celeborn's acceptance is made in whole. Likewise, we could learn from his submission both to power and authority as well as his respect for and protection of Galadriel. In as much, their marriage is an ideal, for each support and love the other; their weaknesses are offset by each other's strengths.
Things to Watch For:
Notice how he is the first to speak with the Fellowship but immediately falls silent when his wife seeks the eyes of those around them and laments solemnly on the death of Gandalf. Obviously he knows from experience and insight that Galadriel's voice is the door to the soul... and it is well to listen to her. Similarly, we should listen to voices of respect and reason and value the opinions of those worthy above all else.
Memorable Quotes:
[to the Fellowship] "Eight that there are here, yet nine there were set out from Rivendell. Tell me, where is Gandalf? For I much desire to speak with him."
