FIRST GROUP PLACING FOR WICKED TORRENT SON
After and impressive debut winning a listed stakes in his first lifetime start, WICKED TORRENT's colt RISING TIDE returned in the Somerville Tattersalls S.-G3 at Newmarket in England. Although he didn't win, he put in a strong performance and was just a half-length off the winner at the wire in the seven furlong event. The 2-year-old was prominent throughout the race, experiencing a bit of traffic trouble when the eventual winner drifted into his path. A stewards' inquiry was conducted, but the result was the same.
"He stayed very well in the closing stages," said Racing Post's chart of RISING TIDE, "but it seemed that it was more of a case of his inexperience causing the problems to him than the winner. He remains a very interesting prospect and may well do better on a more conventional corse."
RISING TIDE is the first stakes performer for his freshman sire WICKED TORRENT. The 2-year-old colt was bred in Kentucky by Shadwell Farm.

WICKED TORRENT'S FIRST WINNER IS IN LISTED STAKES
Most freshman sires notch their first winner and then endure a long drought until they add a stakes winner to their credentials, but not WICKED TORRENT. In spectacular fashion, the four-time G1 winner tallied both his first winner and stakes winner when 2-year-old RISING TIDE won the listed Scottish & Newcastle Pub Enterprises S. (formerly the Washington Singer S.) at Newbury in Great Britain.
The first time starter RISING TIDE was always traveling nicely throughout the seven furlong stakes before quickening in the final two furlongs to open a daylight lead. The juvenile's final margin of victory was a very impressive five lenghts.
Coral quated teh son of WICKED TORRENT at 14-1 for next year's Espom Derby-G1. "He's beautifully bred and made a most impressive introduction - we think he looks sure to figure in next year's classics," said a spokesman for Coral. |
