On Feb 9th 2001, I left behind my family and friends to embark on my first ever plane trip. At age 24 I have never offically lived anywhere besides with my parents and I had never been in a plane with the exception of a little bi-plane for about 15 minutes as a Scout. I was going to Wirtschafts Universität in Vienna, Austria to complete one semester of my M.B.A.

Obviously this was going to be the hardest thing in my live that I have yet to do. What this section of my webpage will attempt to do is give those who want to read it a small view into this new world that I have thrust myself into and eventually some cool pictures to look at.

After a flight from CVG - DTW - AMS - VIE and waiting several days for luggage to arrive (luggage that was only checked to DTW and not VIE as promised) I arrived at my dorm to find my roommate had already moved in. The dorm is really nice and a lot better than what I have seen from the Univesity of Kentucky. I have plenty of room and only have to share a shower with my roommate and not a whole floor of people. Most the of people I have meet so far are really cool people and fun to hang out with, I already have a little crew that I go sightseeing with and cook meals throughout the week with.

The culture is definitely different here, lots of red dyed hair on young and old people alike, a class registration system that could be better run by a 4 yr. old, an extensive public transportation system, Benz cabs complete with leather and CD players, stores that close by 6 pm and bars that stay open until 4 am. Everywhere you see a little bit of American culture as well as a few variants. You can order your meal in English in most places but you only get one glass of your drink without having to buy another, no ice, and most all places have liter marks on their glasses that they follow extensively, tipping is not the custom here so you will often find waiters that aren’t concerned with your needs or desires. Without speaking German you never really know what you are ordering but if you open minded its all eatable. The weather here is about the same as it is back home but when its windy its damn windy. Everyone here has been nice thus far and the Viennese seem to be a warm and friendly culture. Smoking is very big here and you have cigarette dispensing machines on virtually every corner, dogs are allowed to enter just about any store, including grocery stores and there apparently aren’t any animal waste laws here. ( That’s why people are always looking down when they walk ) There are various statues throughout the city and nearly 60 museums here in Vienna alone. Admission is only a few dollars (free on most Fridays) and the displays are one of a kind. There are several opportunities here to see bands that I am familiar with from the States, operas and plays, trial practice runs by the Spanish Riding School and events and activities planned by the school for several parties and wine tasting episodes.
