Course Purpose: Using a text, Lucas, Ninth edition of Public Speaking, students must purchase and use a book.
This course satisfies the
Core Curriculum requirement for all communication arts majors. It also satisfies electives for many non-majors.
Students will give four
speeches, take a mid-term, and a final exam.
Course Attendance: Required. The student will be subject to a failing
grade for missing 20% or more of the class in keeping with University
guidelines. Late arrivals to and early
departures from class will be recorded and three lates/early departures equal one absence. This will be enforced! Perfect attenders will receive three
(3) points added to his or her final semester average.
Exams: Each student will take a MIDTERM and a FINAL
exam. The final exam is comprehensive,
covering the entire semester. The final is only given during the scheduled time
for this class!
Speeches: Each student will give four speeches. The
student will give an impromptu speech, a eulogy speech, speech of introduction, and a persuasive/controversy speech.
Course Objectives: Students will identify basic elements of the
communication process, concepts/functions of language; nonverbal communication
techniques, interview styles and strategies; nature of conflict resolution,
persuasion and inter(intra)personal styles and strategies, self-disclosure, and
public speaking competence.

SCHEDULED TIME ONLY! NO EXCUSES.
Academic Dishonesty: Cheating in all its forms: on tests, not giving
credit to sources in a speech, falsified evidence for a speech, stolen notes or
interviews, etc. will subject the student to an Automatic F in the class and
the matter will be turned over to the Department Head of the Communication
Arts. Further displinary matters may be
turned over to Vice President for Academic Affairs.
