Course Catalog Description:
Research and practice in debate and individual events. Individual events include dramatic interpretation, dramatic duo interpretation, after-dinner speaking, prose, poetry, communication analysis, program oral interpretation, impromptu, extemporaneous, persuasion, and informative. Debate events include parliamentary style and Lincoln-Douglas style.
Incidentals: The student is to act in a professional manner in class. The student can communicate with the professor by email or in my office. Cell phones are not permitted during class.

Course Description:Students will collect research and construct briefs to be used by the parliamentary debate team. In addition, students will assist, prepare, and help run on-campus tournaments and workshops. Some work may include finding dramatic selections of prose or literary merits. Students may travel to tournaments and on-campus events.

Course Objectives/Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students will research topics of current interest; be able to use datebase material available at Odum and elsewhere for topic and evidence generation; better able to prepare and present forensic speeches.
General Education Outcomes for the class:
* Students will express themselves clearly, logically, and precisely in writing and in speaking, and they will demonstrate competence in reading and listening.
Students will prepare and present various speeches on topics of debate and individual performance. These speeches will require the student to listen and speak well. * Students will demonstrate the ability to analyze, to evaluate, and to make inferences from oral, written,and visual materials. Students will be required to use technology to assist them in collection of research on various debate topics.
Evaluation: Course grade will be determined from the following; measures

Research Assignments--30%; Attendance----20%; Speech selections in class---20%; semester research project-30%
Assignment of Final Grade:
100-90=A
89-80=B
79-70=C
69-60=D
59 and below=F
Course Attendance-MANDATORY-- Each student will need to be present in keeping with the university policy; After 20% absences (excused or not excused), the student is subject to a failing grade. After FIVE Absences the student will lose one letter grade from the final average.
There is no final exam for this class.
Academic Dishonesty- cheating in all its forms will not be tolerated; Such examples of cheating include but not limited to looking on someone else's test, receiving help from another student on a project, falsification of evidence, using or lifting information from another source for a paper project or written assignment and/or giving yourself the credit for a project or idea that is not your own; Any student caught cheating will receive an F on that assignment and the matter will be turned over to the dept head and Dean for further punitive action;Such action may include an F in the course and possible  academic suspension.
