FanFiction Terms

AU: Alternate Universe. Changing one of the major plot details. i.e. What if the One Ring went to Sam instead of Frodo?

Flames: Reviews intended to be mean spirited. They are attacks on the author, they are not constructive; they are just mean.

Fandom: the television show, movie, book, etc. that a story is based upon. "Hawk Talk, I Spy" in the MASH fandom.

R&R: No, you won't be flying to Tokyo for this, it means "Read and Review". Usually found in summaries asking onlookers to read the story then give feedback.

Songfic: A story that contains lyrics to a song. Usually, the fic is inspired or based upon the song. i.e. But Names Will Never Hurt Me or Promises

Angst: Sad, depressing, dark, character demons or plot. i.e. Magic

Shipper or Relationshipper: romantic relationship either written about, read about, talked about, obsessed about, etc., etc., etc., by a fan. i.e. Joey and Phoebe from Friends, Aragorn and Arwen from LOTR, or Anne and Carey from So Weird.

Cannon: what the *fandom* really is like. A close to fandom comment from Frank of MASH would be,"Nothing is lonely about being alone...." It's not just for dialogue, it's for scenarios, as well. A close to cannob scenario for So Weird would be that a boy Annie is dating is showing signs of being a reptile.

Fluff: Happy, happy, joy, joy, romantic fic. i.e. It's Ross and Rachel's wedding day and Monica and Chandler find out that Monica is finally going to have a baby and Joey and Phoebe get trapped in a broom closet and realize their true feelings toward each other. Ick, even though that's what we want to happen, it's probably best not for it to happen like that.

gen: general. A story with a non-romantic plot, i.e. Eric Matthews Strikes Again.

Mary Sue: An original female character who is usually a genius, guru, swami, sensa, or expert. Mary Sue is perfect. She has no character flaws; therefore she has no character. She often swoops in and saves the day. Stories containing her are very boring. Mary Sue is the new deus ex machina.

Hurt/Comfort: A romantic story in which one partner is hurt and the other partner comforts. Usually used to get the characters to become a couple.

five-minute-fic: 'Ya getta opening line, 'ya write down the opening, then write like a madman or woman five minutes.

OOC: Out-of-character. In which one character is not how it appears in canon. i.e. The Fonz selling his motorcycle to buy an elephant.

IC: In charcater. Like a character would act in canon. i.e. Fonzie jumping over stuff in his motorcycle and saying "Heeeeeyyy".

Deathfic: Boo hoo. One or more of the characters die.

Spoilers: Information about the fandom revealed in the fic that might ruin watching/reading/listening it. If your story contains this you should put a warning at the top.

RPF: Real Person Fiction. A story written about a real living breathing person who is NOT A CHARACTER. RPF is all about celebrities. So, if you write a story about you and your friend Dave going on a make-believe roller coaster, it ain't RPF. If you write about you and Elvis Presley going on a make-believe roller coaster, then it is RPF.

Crossover: a story unto which a two or more fandoms are featured and are interacting with characters of another fandom. Say, The Brady Bunch/The Partridge Family.

Disclaimer: A writing from the author, usually above their fic, stating that they do not one the fandom and are not making any money off their writing.

Drabble: A random rambling that is short. Could be a POV thingy, could be a response. They usually lack a plot, but are usually very in character.

ficlet: a tiny, baby fic. Very short.

MPREG: Male Pregnancy. Boys having babies. Rember that Arnold Swarzandwhatever's movie, Junior? Yeah, like that.

OC: Original Character. A character not from canaon that is made up by the author.

POV: Point Of Veiw. A fic told from a character's point of veiw. As in, "I walked to Whatshisface's house and we painted his room." opposed to, "Joe Shmoe walked to Whatshisface's house and they painted his room."

rec: a reccomendation of a fic. Usually a link on a website or casual chat between fans.

review: feedback for a fic.

squick: being repulsed by a fic. One fic that would squick me would be about kidney stealers on So Weird.

WIP: Work In Progress. A fic that part is released but is yet to be completed.

slash: of having romance between two male characters.

femslash: of having romance between two female characters.

anime: animation stamped with a big "MADE IN JAPAN" sticker. Once was crudely called "Japanimation", but then changed to "anime", which Japanese for "animation".

beta: a proof reader of fic. Helps with grammar, spelling, plot, and characterization, among other things.
