Having the correct camouflage for the season, extreme cold weather clothing system with multiple inner layers, excellent boots, gloves, face head gear is a priority to survive crawling laying on the ground in extreme weather conditions.
White & gray face paint SHOULD NOT be used to camouflage the face in winter, it requires the face be unprotected hides frostbite on the face & hands. Use of a woolen, polar fleece white or camouflage face mask should be used to conceal protect the face from the elements.
Gloves are important practice firing with the gloves on to protect & conceal the hands. The trigger finger should never be removed from the glove as the gloves lose the ability to protect the finger from the elements. A pair of shooting mittens with a pull back top can be worn allowing the trigger finger to stay protected & prevent frostbite.
Tunneling a snow base out, use of improvised shelters or 4 season tents is a must to conceal protect the team from the elements.
Use of snow shoes, cross country skis, & pull sled is a consideration to carrying all the extra gear required to survive conduct independent actions in winter. A pull sled could be left at a snow base or objective rally point ORP during stalk phase even pulled behind or pushed ahead if properly camouflaged.
Using snowmobiles or having a insertion drop off point, extraction pick up point with a vehicle support team is a serious option to prevent fatigue & over exposure.
Conducting independent action(s) in winter requires more attentive knowledge of rifle zeros & the effect the tempatures has on the point of aim point of impact. The sniper rilfe must be zeroed with attention to the tempature changes a cooling or warming of barrel 10 degrees can have an effect of 1 inch at 100 yards.
It is very important that you practice & record your marksmanship training in your sniper data book. Check your rifle zero as frequently as possible, record know your rifle zero(s), the effect the tempature, wind, light, weather conditions has on your shot(s).
