Other Methods of Cleansing and Protection

The broom (sometimes referred to as besom by magickal people) has been used for cleansing and protection for centuries. One would use a magickal broom to "sweep" the astral buildup out of the area before creating sacred space for worship or energy work. Typically the broom used for protection or cleansing is reserved for just this purpose.

The broom has been hung on or over doors used to enter or leave the home or under or over windows to protect the home from unwanted spirits, entities, negative energies, etc.

The broom has also been placed under the bed or under the pillow to protect the sleeper.

The ringing of a bell or bells is believed to ward off negativity and hostile or negative spirits, or unwelcomed spirits. People will also where anklets made of bells for the same purpose.

CROSS: A symbol of divine protection. Popular in Christianity as a symbol of the religion, used to represent divine love and protection, but also used by other peoples for protection.

EYE OF HORUS: Horus is an Egyptian God. The Eye of Horus can be made of anything, including clay or stone, or gold or silver. It's used for protection and to ward off the evil eye.

PENTEGRAM: a five pointed star that protects the wearer from danger, negativity and evil spirits.With a cirlce around it, it becomes a representation of the 5 elements as a part of and at one with the Universal One, Diety, etc. Because the star in circle is a religious symbol it acts as a protector from evil and negativity as well. This is NOT a symbol of Satanism or demon worship, as some people (often Christians) believe.

OJO DE DIO: Spanish for the "Eye of God." This is an amulet or wall decoration made of sticks and colored yarn and it used for protecting people,. homes, and fields or crops.

STAR OF DAVID: The Star of David is a hexagram that was named by the Jewish, who wear it as a representation of their faith. It's made of six lines that form a six pointed star and is worn by all peoples as protection against evil.

Talismans are symbols formed out of any material, or carved into a material (like leather, stone, clay, etc) for a variety of reasons. They are worn, carried or displayed and endow the wearer or user with the specific charateristics of that symbol. Here we are addressing those associated with protection.
