A pendulum is perhaps one of the easiest forms of divination. My first pendulum was made from one of my rings on a necklace. I'm not really sure where I got the idea, I was 12. It worked quite well. I just bought my first pendulum, as you can see from the graphic above.  I find that both handmade and purchased work just as well.

Historically it was said that a pendulum must be made from a woman's wedding ring and a single strand of her hair. Well, that's a little limiting, don't you think? :)  In actuality a pendulum can be made from a variety of materials including a necklace with a pendant, a ring on a chain, even a lead fishing sinker on a chain or heavy thread like embroidery floss. The key is that it not be too heavy or too light, and swing freely. The length of the string/chain will depend on the weight at the end. You want it to swing freely, but not be so long that it just dangles endlessly. You'll have to experiment a little to get it right.

The key to accurate pendulum divination, after you get or make your pendulum, is asking the questions correctly. In the beginning I suggest starting with yes or no questions asked in a very direct and throughly explained manner. Be sure to start with questions that you know the answer to until you get the hang of it and build a "relationship" with your tool. Be sure to keep a clear mind so you don't persuade the pendulum to give the answer you want to hear!

If you wish to begin using a pendulum, here are a few starter tips:

Sit in a chair or on the floor.  Hold your pendulum by the end of your chain with your thumb and forefinger. In the beginning you may even want to sit at a table with your elbow on the table to steady your hand. Wait for the pendulum to get steady. When you're ready say or think, "Show me a yes answer." Be patient. In time your pendulum will move and set into a steady rhythm. It may swing from side to side, or in a clockwise or counter clockwise motion. Record this motion. When ready, tell it to stop. When it's steady again, say or think, "Show me a no answer." and wait for the pendulum to again move into a steady motion. This motion should obviously be different than the yes answer motion. If it's not, set is aside and wait another day. If you don't have success within a week, the materials you have selected may not be right for you. Practice this for a week before moving on to the next step.

Now you're ready to start building a working relationship with your pendulum. As with learning any divination method and/or learning to work with your spirit guides, it's best to start with what you know and learn from there :) So, hold your pendulum and start asking questions that you know the answers to. You will learn that you must be very direct and precise with your questions, especially in the beginning. The first question I started with is, "Is my name on my birth certificate listed as __________?" Being in possession of my birth certificate, I knew without a doubt the correct answer. I waited to see in which direction the pendulum swung and was pleased that I got the correct answers. I followed with similar simple questions such as, "I am about __ years old" I said "about" because did not feel like calculating my exact age down to the month, day and minute and as I've said, in the beginning with divination, it's best to be as precise as possible until you get extremely comfortable with your tools. Continue with similarly simple and direct questions until you get very comfortable. I'd say work with it every day  for two weeks or every other day for a month. If you are comfortable sharing your new experience with someone, you can test yourself and your pendulum by asking simple and direct  "yes or no" questions about your friend. However he/she must be present or at least in direct communication with you, like phone or IM so they can comment on the replies of the pendulum, and you must not know the answers before you ask the questions. This way, you'll know that you are not moving just the pendulum because you know the answer.

When you're very sure that you are getting accurate and reliable results you can move on to divining present and near future events. As your relationship with your tools grow you'll become more adept at asking the right questions and more sure of the answers.

There will be times when your pendulum will not answer. It may hang lifeless or move in some crazy fashion that's not a normal response. There are some things that just need to be left alone at the time, or we're meant to find the answer through alternate means.  Also, if you become overly dependent on you divination (yes it IS possible) your pendulum may react this way. Let's face it, if you're trying to decide on what to buy at grocery store and you're using your pendulum, you are a little overly dependent *Smile*

I've recently come across an interesting book by D.J. Conway called
A Little Book of Pendulum Magic. It includes some history and a TON of divination techniques and advice. I found it most interesting.

How does it work? I'm not really sure. Maybe deep within our subconscious we already know the answer and this subconscious makes our muscles move ever so slightly as to convety the correct info. Perhaps it's moved by a spirit guide or angel. I'm not really sure, I just know it works well for me :)
