Understanding Music

This course introduces students to the nature of sound as an expressive material, from fundamental aspects of acoustics to the basic materials of music used in musical compositions. Topics include scales, modes, pitch systems, form, melody, harmony and counterpoint. Students become familiar with various theories of music and develop techniques of analysis by completing exercises and a final creative project.

Class Guitar I

This course is designed for students who wish to learn to play the steel string or classic acoustic guitar. It accommodates beginning and advanced beginning students. Students study hard positions, fingering techniques, music notations and other fundamentals. They are introduced to a variety of musical styles and have a opportunity to concentrate on one particular style. Students must have access to a guitar. Note: Students may register twice at each level (100-300-500) for credit.

Topics in Music

This course provides a focused examination of the various popular and classical musical styles as developed and practiced in America and throughout the world. Topics regularly include the History of Rock and Roll as well as selected topics in ethnic and world music. Note: This course may be taken up to four times with different topics.

Experimental Music

This course is designed for students who have had no musical training, those who have been involved in music making at some point in their lives, or those who are active musicians and feel they would like to take a fresh approach to music. Through basic music theory study, performance of musical scores and exercises from contemporary and experimental music, the class becomes familiar with new organizational concepts of music, such as indeterminacy, improvisation and graphic scores. The class gives participants first hand experience in music making and the creative process by working with voices, homemade instruments, found objects, instruments and electronics. Note: This course may be taken up to three times for credit.

Applied Guitar Study II

This private study course is designed for students who wish to learn to play the steel string or classic acoustic guitar. It accommodates beginning, intermediate and advanced experience levels and past experience with the guitar. Students study hand positions, fingering technique, music notation and other fundamentals. They are introduced to a variety of musical styles and have an opportunity to concentrate on one particular style. Students must have access to a guitar. Level is determined by instructor through audition or interview. Note: Students may register twice at each level (100-300-500) for credit.
