Beginning Screenwriting

The process of writing for the screen is explored through writing exercises, readings, discussions, film viewings and screenplay analysis. Some of the assigned writings develop the creative spirit and some develop practical skills such as writing concise action and screenplay format. Narrative structure is also covered. This course provides a foundation for further screenwriting study.

Intermediate Screenwriting

How does the written word translate into a film? What does it mean to think visually? What is original voice? What is re-writing? These topics and others are explored through writing, reading, screenplay analysis and film viewing. Individual voice and authorship are further refined and developed. The elements of dramatic structure are explored and practiced.

Electronic Cinema

This course explores the principles and practices of digital filmmaking. Students using original screenplays, will plan, produce and direct a short digital film. Topics include pre-production, casting, scheduling, location shooting, directing and desktop video. Prerequisites: MDST 160 Desktop Video and SCRW 313 Beginning Screenwriting Note: This course may be taken twice for credit.

Film Video Practicum

This advanced production practicum allows students to plan, write, direct and complete original film video productions under the mentoring supervision of the instructor. Individual or group projects may be undertaken. Arranging for additional production equipment outside the university will be necessary. Note: This course may be taken twice for credit.

Advanced Screenwriting

Building on knowledge from Beginning and Intermediate Screenwriting, this course focuses on writing feature length scripts, re-writing and screenplay analysis. Staged readings and videos of short scenes are done in class. Industry connections and professional opportunities are explored. This course may be taken three times for credit.

Senior Projects in Screenwriting

This advanced production course allows students to produce and direct their own screen plays, or other original projects with the supervision of the instructor. Individual or group projects may be undertaken. Arranging for additional sources of production equipment outside the university will be necessary. May be taken twice for credit. Prerequisites: SCRW 313 Beginning Screenwriting and SCRW 315 Electronic Cinema
