Performing Arts Independent Study

A Savvy video armchair tour of the rich traditions of the performing arts. Students may select from overviews of modern contemporary theater or, intermedia arts, or a history of television. Requirements include 6-8 selected videos and a brief written analysis, interpretation and critique of each one. Viewing for this flexible independent study can be done on site at the teaching center.

Voice: Speaking from Experience

In this course, students who wish to use their voices more expressively work through a variety of methods from relaxation and breathing exercises to personal storytelling and the practice and analysis of poetry, prose and drama. Students work to develop resonance, range, support and to re-learn effective habits of vocal expression.

Expand your imagination, concentration, intuition and sense of play. Actor training can be life enhancing. Topics in Performance: Comedy Workshop

How do you go about discovering your own comic persona? In this workshop students explore their comedic identities through improvisation, stand-up, writing material for themselves and others, and the observation of working comics. Students will cover the cost of attendance at several local venues.

This course goes from critical study of the elements that go into a play to the experience of performance and skills with which to critique a dramatic work.

World of Theater, The

For students interested in the exciting world of theater as well as incoming theater minors. In this class, students learn about the elements of theater, explore some of the most exciting plays in contemporary drama and experience the incredibly rich variety of theater offerings within their own community. Students should plan to cover the cost of attendance at three to four live theater productions.

Playwriting: The Dramatic Moment

Writing for the spoken word and for acting demands different skills than writing for the page. Develop your ear, your signature of voice, your sense of subtext. Through a variety of approaches, from improvisation to creative autobiography, students explore character, conflict and drama as metaphor. Writers with material they would like to explore or adapt for the stage are welcome. Expect to complete at least one scene of a larger work.

Acting II

"Art is in the becoming." Like living well, it is a process requiring discipline, hard work and inspiration. In this class, will move beyond a basic understanding of acting and toward a more complete connection of teh role with the self. A continuation of Thea 345 Acting Offstage and On, students work further to develop the ability to sustain focus of attention and concentrated energy and to deepen their understanding of character motivation and subtext.

Students work with Metro State faculty or artists to develop performances and events which can take place at Metropolitan State of with other art. Rehearsal time is required in addition to class time.

Creation out of lived experience is not necessarily about what was, but about elevating that experience to something else. Through explorations from theater of testimony, to collaborative documentary, story, poetry, dream, monologue and dialogue, students will write under the guidance of a director, toward the evolution of a specific theater piece to be performed within the following school year. Prerequisite: Instructor's consent.
