LE MANS

 

The site of Le Mans was already populated in the Celtic times, there was an Oppidum on the hill of the of old Mans. The town was called Vindunos and was the capital of the Aulerques Cénomans.

After the conquest of the Gauls by Jules Caesar the town took the name of Subdunum .It subsists ruins of the Aqueduct of the Fontenelles which brought water to the town .It also had therms, Arenes (7000 spectators) and a Theatre.

Roads have remained as such during all the high middle Age from Subdunum to Autricum (Chartres, capital of the Carnutes), Castellodunum (Chateaudun), Evreux (Mediolanum), Noviodunum Jublains, (capital of the Aulerques Diablinthes), Condate (Rennes), Juliomagus (Angers), Caesarodunum (Tours), Genabum (Orléans), Areines (near Vendome) and Limonum (Poitiers).
