this chessboard is designed to be used by two human players located at the same computer. there is no chess program behind it. in fact, it doesn't even know the rules of chess and will allow you to make a wide variety of illegal moves.
to make a move, first click on the piece you wish to move, then click on the square to which you want to move it.
if you're here for the first time, the chessboard probably looks like a bunch of letters and asterisks. to see chess pieces on the board, you can use the built-in images or you can download a chess font. to use images, click the [options] box and select "Images" from the drop-down menu. the images are from Xboard and are used here under the terms of the GPL. total download size for all the images is about 80 kB. if you'd rather install and use a chess font, you can find one at www.enpassant.dk. this page supports most of the fonts shown there. two good, simple fonts are cases and cheq.
some gameplay notes: castling is not properly supported yet. also, pawns automatically promote to queen.
