GLSEN Sioux Falls

Chapter History

Information about starting a Sioux Falls chapter of GLSEN was originally compiled by Aric Lane who started the initial campaign.  After Aric left town the campaign was taken over by Megan Rohrer, Lisa Hatzenbeller and Julie Farni.  Lisa and Julie attended the GLSEN leadership conference in Chicago and started communicating with the Midwest Field Office.  A letter of intent to start a chapter was sent to the Midwest Field office by Megan and Lisa on December 18, 2000.

Since the Chicago Convention Megan, Lisa and Julie have contacted all the local LGBT organizations in Sioux Falls to create a contact list and garner support in the Sioux Falls queer community for the chapter.  We have also contacted the Sioux Falls School Superintendent Jack Keegan who has helped us to work with the local schools.

In order to promote GLSEN Sioux Falls in the area, we have helped to lead a Sioux Falls School District in-service on sexuality for K-12 teachers and faculty.  We have also sponsored events around town in conjunction with Pride on the Prairie.  We have also created an educational webpage (www.oocities.org/meganrohrer  -which will become www.glsensiouxfalls.org) that is linked to all the LGBT organizations webpages in the area.
