Defending Love

My arms were wrapped around my love
His hands fit mine like a perfect glove
A man came up and pulled out a gun
To himself, he whispered, 'This'll be fun'
A sneering smile and flashing grin
Immediately made me afraid of him
He approached me and said quietly
'It is either you, or it is he'
I looked at my love with tears in my eyes
I sent a quick prayer up to the skies
'Me,' I told him, 'You'll have to kill me'
'But please just promise you'll let him go free'
He turned to him and gave him a shove
I whispered softly, 'Goodbye, my love'
A drop fell down, a single tear
How I wish my love were near
A single shot right to the head
I'm falling down. I'm gone. I'm dead.
I comfort my love, say a silent goodbye
I try not to watch the tears fall from his eyes
Then one last whispered message I give
That he will remember as long as he lives

"As I watch you from up above,
Remember, I died defending love"
