The next day at “Heaven’s Gate“
was pretty quiet, and now everyone was sitting in the dining room.
“Why am I not allowed to go to the
village, Professor?”
“I have no idea, Smiley. But you
know that Holmes got strange methods, which also brought us, great trouble
sometimes.”
“Yes, but ‘e’s obviously our only
‘elp. don’t ya think? And why did ‘e ‘ad to go to Glasgow, right now?”
“I got a few ideas about that, but
I must confess, that I can’t figure out why ?.”
In this moment Holmes came back
from Glasgow.
“You’re a lucky Dog, Smiley.”
“What?!” Smiley looked up confused.
“And what a lucky Dog you’ll be
at your Twenty fifth birthday.” Holmes was not often so amused.
“Ma Twenty fifth birthday??!” Smiley
yelped in surprise.
“I’ll explain it later. Did anything
strange happen here?”
The others just shook their heads.
“It was pretty quiet around here.”
Watson answered.
“And what happened in Glasgow?”
“Some interesting things, Colonel.
I think we just got one last thing to do. Professor, is it possible that
Dr Stride comes here within the next three hours?”
“I would say so. As far as I know,
Smiley was his only patient in the last few days. Sara, would you please
call Dr Stride.”
“Yes, Sir. But what shall I say
‘im?”
“Tell him,” Holmes interrupted,
“that Smiley is going to die in the next few hours, if no one comes here
to help him.”
The others just looked up in bewilderment.
“It’s important that he comes here
alone.” Holmes continued.
“Holmes, you don’t think, that Mr
Stride has got something to do with this whole calamity?”
“No, Professor, but let’s wait till
tonight.”
All other questions died away unanswered.
Dr Stride arrived a short while after
lunch was finished.
Holmes and the Professor stopped
him, before he could enter Smiley’s room.
“Dr Stride, before you see Smiley,
I have to make a confession.”
“What is it, Mr Moriarty?”
“First of all, may I introduce Mr
Sherlock Holmes to you?”
“Mr Sherlock Holmes, the detective
from London?! Isn’t he a rather unusual visitor, Professor Moriarty?!”
“Yes, he is. But unfortunately he’s
the only one in this world, who should be able to find out, who poisoned
Smiley, because I can’t think clearly at the moment.”
“Then I think I can say, it’s a
honour to meet you, Mr Holmes.”
“Thank you, Sir, but I would say,
we already met.”
“What do...?”
“You’ve been visited by a young
man named Robert Paddington, do you remember?”
“You mean, that…. that was you?”
“Yes, you see, it seemed to be my
only chance to get the information I needed from the citizens, without
letting a man called Quentin Donovan know, that I’m here.”
“Quentin Donovan?!”, the doctor
shouted, “I’ve heard he was the reason, why Smiley and his sister once
lived here. But I thought he’s dead.”
“I believe he isn’t.”
“And what are you going to do, Mr
Holmes?”
“First of all, we need a death certificate
from you.”
“For Smiley, is that right? Is his
state really that bad?”
“He never felt better, Mr Stride.”
the Professor answered.
“But, then why...?!”
“We just need the death certificate
from you, it’s really important.”
“Alright, alright.”
Minutes past, but then the certificate
was finally finished.
“So, here it is.”
“Thank you, Sir. Now, if you go
back to the village, please talk to nobody about the things that just happened.
But tell Mr O’Daniels he shall come here.”
“The undertaker? But I thought you
said, Smiley is alive and kicking?!”
“Oh, he is, but we need the undertaker
and his helper to make the whole thing look more realistic.”
“Oh, I understand. Shall I tell
him that Smiley is still alive?”
“No! In the name of all that’s holy!
Don’t tell him the truth! Let him think what you thought as you came here!
And don’t tell him, that I’m here! WHATEVER YOU DO !” Holmes shouted.
“Y..y..yes, of course, Mr Homes.”
Doctor Stride was surely as bewildered
as the Professor as he left. It doesn’t take long until the sounds of the
hearse came from outside. Mr O’Daniels was tall, thin man with a black
beard and long black hair. As Doctor Stride said, he was already Forty
Five to Fifty years old, but still strong for his age.
“Where’s the poor soul?” he asked
in a deep, monotone voice.
“Let me show you. He’s still in
his bed.” the Colonel sniffed.
Minutes later the coffin was placed
next to the bed. In the same moment the door was slammed shut.
“What the...?!” the undertaker and
his servant turned around, just to look right into the barrel of Holmes’
and Watson’s revolvers.
“What is the meaning of this?” the
undertaker demanded, angrily.
“Why don’t YOU answer it, Mr O’Daniels?
Or shall I say ‘Mr Donovan’?”
“Who’s that?” the Professor cried.
In the meantime Donovan and his
servant had been handcuffed.
“I... thought ‘e... ‘e is dead.”
Smiley stammered.
“Obviously ‘e survived.” Todd was
quite perplexed.
“Oh damn it.”, Donovan shouted,
“This man is right. I survived the Professors attack. Later I moved to
the village.”
“To observe Smiley’s moves.”
“Yes, Professor. Gosh, if only
the boy had just given that pendant to me...”
“Now what in hell is SO important
about that little thing?!”
“May I answer it, Colonel?” Holmes
interrupted.
“Of course, Sir.”
“Smiley, did you ever heard the
name William Marewe or do you know something about a large estate in Lancashire
called Marewe Hall?”
“No. What’s up with this things?”
“Well, on your Twenty fifth birthday
you, as the last male member of the family Marewe or better Marrow, will
be the new owner of the complete estate, along with about Three or Four
Million Pounds.”
“Holy....!” Smiley jumped up from
the bed. Also the others in the room, except Donovan, looked at Holmes
a bit bewildered.
“The man from who you received this
pendant, Smiley, was Mr Angus Fairway. Mr Fairway once was one of the two
administrators of the money and the estate of the Marewe family. You see,
the last owner of Marewe Hall, Jacob Marewe had never married, so he died
alone. But he hired Mr Fairway to find the family of his great-grandmother,
who left the old estate and moved to Ireland about 100 years ago. The other
administrator is a man called Bartholomew Andrew, who actually lives in
the United States, but he often comes to his home country and stays in
the Palace hotel in Glasgow.
Well, after a long research Mr Fairway
finally found out, that the family he was looking for, changed their name
from Marewe to Marrow after they moved to Ireland. You remember your Fathers
words? He said that there is not another single soul with the name Marrow.
I would say, your father didn’t know about the family’s past. But anyway,
Mr Fairway gave the pendant to the only male member of the family, who
wasn’t over Twenty-Five years old. An eccentric paragraph in Mr Marewe’s
last will said, that who ever got this pendant must be Twenty-Five years
old. Not older, not younger. Don’t ask me why. But the greedy Mr Donovan,
the brother of a late servant at Marewe Hall, had just become Twenty-five,
so he wanted this pendant, to get the money, which did not belong to him
in any way. We know, that more and more problems showed up, and Donovan
tried absolutely everything to get the medallion.”
“May I interrupt you ‘ere?”, Smiley
questioned, “I’m only Twenty three years old, but Mr Donovan is about Forty
five or so,…So isn’t it impossible for ‘im t’ get the ’eritage?”
“Not necessarily, Smiley. Mr Donovan
proved in the last few years, that he is cold-blooded and would do everything
in his power to get the pendant, I would say that he planned to hire a
Twenty five year old man, who would show the pendant to Mr Andrew, and
after Mr Donovan got what he want, he would kill his henchman. I think
that was also what he planned for the man, who once killed your girlfriend.”
“Yes, that’s possibility.” said
the Professor, “but how did you know, that he was the undertaker.”
“Simple. You see, if Smiley would
have died here, Mr Donovan would have been the last person, who would have
seen him before the coffin would have been transported to London for the
funeral. I don’t think that anyone in the church would have noticed, that
Smiley isn’t wearing his pendant.”
“But why didn’t ‘e poisoned Smiley
earlier?”
“A good question Todd, but Mr Donovan
must have been sure, that Mr Andrew is in Glasgow at the moment, because
he won’t wait to get the heritage. It sounds stupid, and must say it was.
But now let me explain, how he did
it.
I would say, the whole thing already
started a few days ago. I questioned Amanda about the things that happened
on the day on which Smiley went ill. She fortunately mentioned, that she
let in a man, who was standing outside in the rain. This man was Kamal,
Mr Donovan’s servant and assistant. Amanda said that she never left her
compatriot alone in the kitchen, but she wondered, why he asked her if
she could give a little present to Smiley. As she asked him why she should
do so, he answered, that he brought Smiley a little gift from India. He
said that he once met Smiley in India, and that this little something is
for him. How would Amanda know, that the mechanism in the glass box, which
Kamal gave her, would poison Smiley. I remembered that you’d mentioned
“The Dying Detective” in London, Professor, and, as I saw the little wound
on Smiley’s hand, Something told me, that the same method of poisoning
found it’s use here. Todd and Amanda proved this thought of mine. The light
illness that was caused by the box was the first step. The second was to
poison Smiley with an injection of various, more deadly poisons.”
“But how? The only injections he
received were the one of Dr Stride, and the one I gave him.”
“A good interjection, Doctor. In
fact, Smiley WAS poisoned by Dr Stride’s injection. But Dr Stride didn’t
know that it wasn’t a medicine. Just remember Dr Stride’s story with the
button. At the moment I heard that little anecdote I know what happened:
Kamal caused Smiley’s first little illness, and then he collide with Dr
Stride, who was on his way to see Smiley, in the village. In that moment,
Kamal exchange the Doctor’s medical-bag for a faked one. Mr Stride didn’t
noticed what he was given to Smiley. But, I would say, fortunately he lost
one of his buttons, which he put into the fake bag. Now after Kamal re-exchanged
the bags, Donovan found Mr Strides button in the false bag, so that Kamal
had to collide with the Doctor one more time, and put the button in the
real bag, isn’t that so, Mr Donovan?!”
“Yes, it is!”, Donovan shouted,
“Damned hell! As far as I heard a little, stupid sleuth is working on the
case, but you,... You damned little bastard, you’re acting like you are
Sherlock Holmes!”
“Well, Surprise!” Holmes sneered,
“That’s the name on my Identity Card.”
Donovan was dumbfounded.
Later the night Donovan and his henchman
were escorted away by the police.
“I don’t know how I could thank
you, Holmes.” the Professor acted a little bit shy after the case was finished,
as he, Holmes and Watson where standing on the station in Glasgow.
“Maybe you should just stay away
from London and the crime business for a while, and enjoy your holiday
here a little while longer than you usually do.”
“Very well, Homes, Fair’s fair…..
But you two have got to promise me, that you’re not going to tell anyone
about this, do you understand !.”
“Promise!” Holmes and Watson said,
as they stepped onto the train.
They looked back at the tall and
thin figure of the Professor, as the train left the station.
“From rags to riches, really, that
are the right words for this. An interesting case, don’t you think, Watson.
But I must confess, that there are still some points I can’t explain.”
Holmes said after a while.
“And what’s that, Holmes?”
“For example, what happened to Smiley’s
sister Evelyn? Or why did Smiley’s parents had to die?”
“I think, Holmes, only time can
tell.”
“Yes, I agree here. There are
more things in heaven and earth, than are dreamt of in our philosophy.” |
