Deputy Sheriff Jerry Ballester finds himself mired in a routine investigation of a succession of burglaries in the quaint North Georgia mountain village of Helen. But everything changes when one day an old flame comes to town begging for help and telling of a frightening change in her husband--the Atlanta DA--and a tale of strange happenings at their ranch.
Ballester's discovery of secret activity beneath the ranch leads him to a sinister group or high-powered Atlanta citizens calling themselves the Central Core who will stop at nothing to achieve their ends including murder and the threatened destruction of the great city of Atlanta.
