Trim and counter

After a four week wait, Lowes/Eagle finally received my rosette blocks and plinth blocks for doing the interior trim.  Each window gets 4 rosette blocks and each door gets 2 rosettes and 2 plinths.  We are using a fluted 3 1/4" casing for the trim around openings and a 5 7/8" classic Victorian baseboard trim.  The blocks really help the work go quickly since there are many more 90 degree corners instead of 45 degree miter cuts.  All the trim will eventually be painted a bright white - right now the casing and baseboard are primed and the blocks are not.

Jerry Thompson helps for a day and we knock out most of the window trim on the second floor.  We go with very accurate cuts - working to the nearest 1/32th of an inch to eliminate gaps and minimize the caulking work for later.

Baseboard trim goes much more slowly since it requires 45 degree and 22 1/2 degree miter cuts.

Our countertop is scheduled for installation on Friday, so I spend a day building the sub-counter.  I use 3/4" A/C sanded plywood with the "A" (or smooth sanded) side up.  This will give us a really nice surface for our granite counter.  The plywood will also help support the granite where it overhangs the cabinets (foreground-right).

Mel spends her weekend knocking off many of the misc. items that remain to be done.  She has cutout and installed the countertop for the 2 sinks in the shared bath.  Then she installs cabinet knobs.  Lots of items get crossed off the "to-do" list with Mel helping.

(Look Mom - there's people in this week's photos!)
