Plumbing for carpenters

The 1st floor is 2X6 construction with 9 foot high walls.  These walls are big, heavy, and hard to move.  The walls all need to stand perfectly vertically (or plumb).  A team of carpenters would normally plumb wall sections by having one person use a level to check the wall, while another person moves the wall and nails off a diagonal 2X4 to hold the wall perfectly.   Working solo, this is a tough job to do without a special tool.  This "Tool of the Week" is a Proctor Wall Brace.

Proctor Braces have been around since the early 1950s and are virtually unchanged in the last 50 years.  One end screws to the top of the wall and the other to the subfloor.  A screw and swivel permit a solo builder hold a level with one hand and rotate the brace to adjust the wall in or out.

All of the wall sections are carefully plumbed and a 2nd top plate is nailed along the entire top of the walls to hold each section in place.
