Porch roof framing and interior main staircase

I subbed out the installation of the main staircase.  Specialty Staircase Inc installed the main staircase stringers and tacked in temporary treads and risers.  This gives us easy access to the second floor, allows us to pass a framing inspection, but protects the final staircase from damage during construction.  The finish treads and risers will be installed right after we paint the interior walls, but before we paint trim.

Meanwhile, our turned porch posts arrive and I erect the headers that will support the porch rafters.  The Proctor wall braces come in handy again!

The rafters are stick built from 2X6.  Rafter runs are calculated using Pythagorus:

RafterLength2 = Rise2 + Run2

The cut at the ridge (or in this case, at the house wall) laid out on a carpenter's square is calculated as

(Rise/Run) X 12

(Our porch rafters are about a 4/12 pitch)

Tristan and Tom can both haul their weight in lumber.  They help with the east porch roof rafters and the job is finished in a flash.

A plum cut for sub-fascia and a cut back for soffits complete the rafter work.  When the rafters are so close to the ground, I like to make the final cuts "in the air" rather than "on the workbench".  I get a more perfect line and save a bit on brain wear and tear.
