Remember Me?
Originally Written: September 18th, 2006
Dear God, remember me?
I’m the one sitting in the back row
Watching the sweating priest as he screams
Damnation and fire spewing from his lips
My mom holding my hand tightly
Praying softly, ever so softly,
That You will heal my daddy
And stop the screaming at night.

Dear God, remember me?
I’m the one with a baby on my hip
Screaming because he’s hungry
The bill collectors pounding on the door
The word “eviction” painted in red
My husband’s been gone for days
Even though he just went to get more milk
With all the money we had ever saved.

Dear God, remember me?
I’m the one with blood on my thighs
The doctor shaking his head sadly
Telling me nothing could be done
That it’s not my fault and things like this
Just Happen
And asking if I would like to see her
Perfect little fingers reaching out for me in death.

Dear God, remember me?
I’m the one whispering Your name
I keep asking if You’re there
But I’m beginning to think You’re not
Because if You were, You would stop this
You would take away the pain
Please, God, remember me.
Please remember me.
