Round Table Talk - pt 4
- What's the
future of Melange? Megumi: I
was thinking that we would finish the print publication with the next,
final issue, but we could continue publishing on the web. Organising a
web is not much work for me, but I am not sure about the print one, because
the members will be separate. Chang: I think
Melange has come to the final stage, to say good-bye to each other.
Emiri: Even
though we finish publishing Melange, I think everyone still continues
writing something. So it's not just the end. Richard: If
you talk to some people in the Massey English department, they could actually
continue it in a different form with different people. Daniel: I think that while the printed form is a much better medium than cyberspace, the thought behind being part of an "Eighth Continent" lends itself well to the use of the internet - in which all continents are linked via electronic equipment. By using the Melange web site people from any background or any location in the world can express thoughts and opinion in English or access such material without the issues of deadlines or obtaining hard copy material. Also costs are kept to a minimum. One drawback is the
lack of involvement by all members - the webmaster has a lot of work while
others become merely contributors. But since the founding members of the
Eighth Continent are now themselves on different continents at present
this seems the most realistic means of keeping the dream alive. Itsuka: Well unfortunately when you stop being a student there is less time to spend for yourself... When you are a student you complain how little time you have for yourself but you never realise how much you had precious time to do what you are interested in. Now I am thinking of getting into translation, although I don't know in what area. But without Melange and the members of the 8th continent I would never have come up with the idea of getting into translation (well not of my work but of others' work!! hehe). So I deeply thank
Megumi, Emiri, Chang, Daniel and everybody who had the (dis)honour of
being involved in making this magazine!!! Thank you! |
