Sample Experiment: |
this is a simple experiment that cost less than $5 for all of the kids. while milk is mostly composed of water, it also has lipids and proteins that are held together precariously by chemical bonds, the detergent causes the chemical bonds to break down - and with the help of some pretty colors, the students can see just how the reaction works. |
in addition to learning about chemical reactions and participating in experiments, the students had to observe and record everything that was happening. the recordings were put together in book form at the end of the course. |
every friday afternoon between 12 and fifteen kids come to the church to learn about science. even in the private school system, there is very little opportunity here for kids to have hands on experience in any subject, let alone science. the science courses run six weeks, with a student cap of 18 students. this allows for more students to be involved with the class and to provide a smaller, more intimate learning community. the first class explored "chemistry" - focusing on mixtures, solutions, reactions and "observations." |
we exploded a soda bottle, grew crystals, learn about concentrations, witnessed the reaction of baking soda and vinegar, watched milk "break down" with the help of liquid dish detergent, cleaned pennies, made pennies dirty... and much more. look below for pictures from the first class of "clase de ciencia." |
