Nutritional Therapies
Alpha-ketoglutaric acid is an amino acid that metabolizes another free radical (ammonia) that is a by-product of protein metabolism. SAMe (S-Adenosyl Methionine) and Methylcobalamine (Vitamin B-12), are given to improve the process of methylation wherein DNA and RNA damage is repaired. Folic Acid, Methylcobalmine and SAMe are used to improve monocarbon metabolism. With improper monocarbon metabolism, the OH- radical causes damage to proteins, DNA, RNA and cell membranes. Selenium, Glutathione and Methionine are key nutrients that are depleted in the SOD-Free Radical generation process and need to be replenished.

A specifically developed program of minerals, vitamins, nutritional supplements and amino acids should be used to support the body, deal with maldigestion or malabsorption, supply depleted nutrients, foster neuronal repair (LeJeune) and support the liver as it detoxifies the system. Adjustments are made in the diet as needed to deal with any allergies or lactose intolerance. Avoidance of foods high in SOD is important as well.

Hormonal Therapies
Melatonin is a hormone used in treatment, the use and benefits of which are described in detail above. A number of patients with Down Syndrome also suffer from thyroid deficiencies (hypothyroidism). If the testing shows such a deficiency, thyroid replacement is administered to correct the problem. As with all therapies, thyroid is used only if indicated. Studies also indicate the potential for benefit from the use of growth hormone. In one particular study involving 16 children, growth hormone was administered for a period of 24 months. The results were that these children went from being in the 50th percentile for their age group to the 90th percentile.

Nootropics ("Smart Drugs")
Piracetam is a so-called "smart drug" that is reported to enhance learning, memory and cognition and possibly social skills. According to Dean et al, Piracetam "corrects cognitive defects caused by disease." Piracetam enhances cognition in both the "normal" and the cognitively impaired. "Nootropics seem to produce resistance to several neurotoxic substances and stimulate learning through influences on the hippocampus and the cortex. Oxygen utilization by the brain appears to be significantly enhanced." (Schaffler) Piracetam appears to be safe and lacking significant side effects. It has been used for decades in millions of prescriptions without problem. Piracetam has no known toxicity or contraindications. It is available only by prescription. Piracetam should only be considered as a part of a full treatment protocol and not as a stand-alone treatment.

Outcomes
By utilizing a multifaceted and individualized treatment plan, dramatic improvements are definitely achievable! Programs using nutritional therapy alone are achieving positive results. Imagine what is possible by broadening the attack on this syndrome and stopping the domino effect of problems. By taking this approach, we attack what is causing the problems, we provide ongoing support to prevent further damage and we help the body to repair itself and thereby reverse damage that has already occurred. The key is to act early, act fast and act with determination and commitment. As was said in the introduction, the scientific rationale and support for taking this approach are there. The risks are slight. The potential for positive outcomes of a great degree is very strong.
