High-fiber diet may help control Type II diabetes By John Fauber Of the Journal Sentinel staff Last Updated: May 14, 2000 A high-fiber diet may be an important tool in controlling Type II diabetes, according to a study published last week in the New England Journal of Medicine. A group of 13 obese, Type II diabetes patients who consumed just such a diet had significant drops in glucose and insulin levels as well as cholesterol and triglycerides levels, according to the results of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center study. "Diet is the mainstay of diabetes treatment, but often is neglected," Abhimanyu Garg, a professor of internal medicine and co-author of the study, said in a statement. "The study supports the view that diet can improve glucose and lipid levels and thus reduce the risk of long-term diabetic complications." Fiber actually might reduce the need for oral medication, according to an editorial in the same issue. |
