Mineral deficit more important than salt excess in hypertension

WESTPORT, Aug 14 , 1999 (Reuters) - Public health recommendations regarding nutrition and hypertension should center on encouraging people to increase mineral intake, not to reduce their salt intake, according to two papers published in the August 14th issue of Science.

In a Perspectives article, Dr. David A. McCarron, of Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, describes the results of two recent meta-analyses and two large clinical trials that investigated the effects of sodium
restriction or mineral supplementation on blood pressure.

These studies ACI-...provide compelling evidence that adequate intake of minerals, rather than restriction of sodium, should be the focus of dietary recommendations for the general population.
