BINGE EATING DISORDER |
Binge Eating Disorder is more prevalent than anorexia or bulimia, but it is difficult to know just how many people suffer from this typeof eating disorder because they rarely seek help for it. Binge Eaters may not suffer from the severe physical complications that anorectics and bulimics suffer from, but the same is not to be said emotionally. Binge Eaters are often very ashamed of the way they "lose control" with food, and they tend to be depressed, ashamed, and feel guilty. Sometimes binge eaters will have boughts of bulimia brought on by the binge eating and guilt. Most often, bingeing occurs as a consequence of repeated diets and efforts to lose weight. Binge Eating Disorder does not always lead to quick weight gain, especially if the sufferer is an athlete or has a very high metabolism. However, over 50% of binge eaters eventually become obese. |

Christina Corrigan Christina died at the age of 13, weighing 672 pounds at 5'3". Her mother was convicted of felony child neglect, not because of Christina's weight, but because Christina was covered in her own urine and feces and numerous bed sores when paramedics found her. She spent her last days of life eating and watching television while in bed. Her mother hadn't taken her to the doctor in years. It is rumored that Christina may have had a genetic disorder which contributed to her rapid weight gain, but binge eating also played a big part.
