The One Man Band
aka: L'homme Orchestre
Time: 2 min.
Year: 1900
Synopsis: A conductor (Melies) arrives on a stage with seven
chairs and sits on each of them. Every time he
moves onto another chair he leaves a clone of himself. The conductor than begins
conducting his band of clones to play a song until they disappear. To create the effect of
cloning himself, Melies exposed the film seven times. This was probably the most
anyone had used multiple exposure up to this time, for Melies was not the only
one using these effects, but he was the only one using them consistently in a
theatre style performance. The same usage of multiple exposure was used in
Buster Keaton's The Playhouse twenty years later.
