Jacque Cartier
(Jacque Cartier)
                (Jacque Cartier)
Jacque Cartier was born in 1491 in St. Malo, France. He was a
French explorer. He set out on three voyages the first one was to find a
route around North America to East Asia, the second voyage was to he
wanted to find the St. Lawrence River, and on the third voyage to try and
find diamonds and gold. These voyages were set from 1534 to 1542.

On Cartiers first voyage the King of France, Francois I, sent him to look for a passage through North
America to East Asia. Cartier brought two ships with him. They finally got to an island just off the coast of
Newfoundland twenty days later. He sailed around the Bay of St. Lawrence. The islands were so big that
Cartier thought they were a part of the mainland. While he was exploring the islands, he met some
Misms Indians. They started to trade with the Indians. Although the Bay of St. Lawrence wasn't a route to
China, he brought back two  of the Huron Indians sons back to France, so they could learn french.

On Cartiers second voyage, which started in 1535 and ended in 1536, he wanted to explore the St.
Lawrence River. He didn't know his way around, so he asked two interpreter-guides. He sailed up to the
Indian town of Stadocona. He went onward and went to Hochelaga and climed the cliffs. For the winter he
and his men stayed in Stadacona. Many of his men died from scurvy, a disease caused by not enough
vitamin C. They were told about a cure by using the white cedar tree
                                                                             , so the rest lived.

On Cartiers third voyage Jean Francois de la Rocque, his leader, and the other men were trying to find the
treasured land. They built a fort near Saquenay. They thought they found diamonds and golds, but they really
found fools gold. They spent the rest of that winter near Stadocona. Atleast thirty-five of the crew members
were killed by Iroquois. After the winter was over Cartier went back to France.

Cartier never found a route through the new land and to East Asia. He passed away at age 66 on September 1, 1557.
