Alternate ending to "Get Bananas". Orphaned by Emily. Harvey rubbed his eyes as he entered his house, when his cell phone rang. "Leek." "Hey Harv, it’s Nash. How are you doing?" "I don’t know Nash. This thing with Evan…it’s just bugging me to no end. How in the world could Evan steal that money and get away with it?" "I don’t know, Harv." "Nash I have a lot of trust in Evan. Has he had a hard time with getting back on his feet again? Yes, he has, but this…this just doesn’t sound like something Evan would do." Harvey walked into his kitchen. "Well, Harvey, you and I have been in this game a long time; we both know cops go bad. Now I am not saying Evan has gone bad; what I am saying is we have to keep a close eye on him. Maybe do some snooping around his place." "I hate to do that Nash, but I understand." Harvey looked back into his living room were the front door was open. "Nash could you hold on a second my front door is open. I could have sworn I shut it." "Sure Harvey." Nash answered. Harvey walked out into the living room. He barely got two steps when he got blindsided. Dropping the phone Harvey struggled to regain his bearings only to be hit again. Nash heard the commotion on his end. "Harvey?" He called out and got no answer. Nash waited and listened. "Well, well what do we got hear?" Baptiste sneered. Harvey tried to get up. Blood was getting into his eyes as he tried to stand. Baptiste lifted his baseball bat. "Hey boys look at what I got, a little piggy." "What do you want?" Harvey choked. "My money, and a little revenge for you messing with my boys." Baptiste answered as he slugged Harvey once more with the end of the bat. Harvey hit the floor hard. Nash still could hear what was going on at Harvey’s place, and he knew it was much more than a friendly neighborhood talk. "Joe!" Joe came walking over to Nash. "What?" "Get some units running over to Harvey’s, I think he’s in trouble." Joe nodded as he pulled out his cell phone. Baptiste leaned over Harvey. "Were is my money?" Harvey didn’t answer. "Well then looks like I’ll have to beat it out of you." Harvey didn’t even feel anything after the fist few blows. He struggled to remain awake but finally gave in after one of Baptiste's men kicked him in the face. "Come on boys, lets go." Nash and Joe headed out of the SIU. "Nash the nearest unit is Ronnie and Guy. They're about fifteen minutes out." "Then we’ll make it there in ten +++ As Nash pulled up, he saw that Harvey’s front door was still open. "That doesn’t look good." Joe said as he pointed to the open door. Nash parked the Cuda in front of Harvey’s car. As they were getting out, Ronnie pulled up behind Nash. "What’s going on Boss?" Nash pulled his gun out. "I don’t know. Ronnie you and Guy take the back; Joe and I will take the front." They all went their separate ways. Nash carefully went in first. The inside was in shambles. Nash motioned for Joe to go upstairs. Joe nodded and headed up. "Harv?" Nash called out in a whisper. As Nash came into the living room he stopped as he saw Harvey lying on the floor. Ronnie entered just as Nash kneeled down next to Harvey. Gently Nash rolled Harvey onto his back. Ronnie pulled out his CB. "531 to dispatch." A voice answered. "Go a head 531." "We need an ambulance at our dispatched location, we have an officer down." "10-4, 531." Nash was sickened by Harvey’s appearance. His face was coated in blood, had deep gashes and it had started to swell. Nash rubbed his hand on Harvey’s left side, and could feel jagged pieces of bone. Joe came down the stairs. "Nothing upstairs Nash..." Joe stopped mid sentence. "Oh, my God." Nash looked back down at Harvey knowing he could do little for Harvey now. Joe looked around the living room. "Nash look." Joe said as he pointed to some graffiti scribbled on the wall. "I am guessing Jerry didn’t do that." Nash looked up. "No that’s Baptiste’s calling card." "Want me to go pick his ass up?" Ronnie asked. "No, our concern right now is Harvey. Call Evan tell him what happened." Nash looked back down at Harvey. "Don’t worry bubba we’ll get you threw this." +++ Nash walked back and forth across the waiting room floor. Joe looked up to him. "Nash walking around like that wont make the doctors go any faster." Nash pausing he rubbed his temples. "Yeah I know." Ronnie came followed by Guy. "Boss we can’t get a hold of Cortez. What do you want us to do?" Nash was about to answer when the doctors came out. The doctor’s face was grim. "Captain Bridges?" "I'm Nash Bridges. How's Inspector Leek?" Nash hadn't felt this much dread since Cassidy's car accident. "Captain, we're about to take Inspector Leek up to surgery. As you know, several of his ribs were fractured. Those ribs did a lot of damage inside. His left lung is torn, his left kidney may be lacerated and there may be other damage as well. We won't know for sure, until we get inside." The doctor waited for the news to sink in then continued. "A plastic surgeon will suture up the lacerations to his head and face. He has a hairline fracture of the left cheekbone, as well as a fracture to his left ulna. That was probably a result of a defensive gesture." The men all turned to watch as Harvey's bed was wheeled down the hall toward surgery. To Nash, Harvey looked worse than before. He tried to concentrate as the doctor began speaking once more. "I'll be able to tell you more after surgery. I should prepare you, however…if the damage to Inspector Leek's kidney is severe, he will have to retire from the force." The doctor shook Nash's hand then hurried off in the direction Harvey had been taken. Exchanging worried looks, Nash and the others shared a moment of fear and worry. Nash couldn't possibly imagine the SIU without Harvey. He needed to make some phone calls; Anna had to know about what happened. He needed to track down Evan, as well. Surgery took time, and Nash knew they all had a long wait ahead of them. Joe walked up to Nash with his hands dug deep into his pockets. "Now what Nash?" "Put an APB out on Evan. I want his ass at the SIU ASAP!" "Will do Nash." Joe answered as he turned to go. "Oh, Joe who ever finds Evan, make sure they tell him Harvey was beaten up, but that's all. I'll do the rest." "Okay." Joe went to find Ronnie and relay the message. +++ Nash leaned against the wall, the phone receiver pressed tightly against his ear. "Yeah Anna, I know." Nash watched as Joe brought in a brown bag and set it on a table. "I am glad, too, Jerry wasn't there. I'll call as soon as I hear something. Bye." Nash hung up. Joe could see all of the stress from the day taking a toll on Nash. "Come on Nash I got you some dinner." Nash slowly made his way over to Joe. "Any word on Evan yet?" "No, sorry. I did call Cass and she said if he came by she would send him right to the SIU." There was a brief pause between the two men. "Nash?" "What?" Nash answered. "This isn't good is it?" "No. And I don't see it getting any better." Joe looked down at his sandwich. "Were going to loose him aren't we?" Nash shrugged his shoulders. "We might Joe." +++ Evan staggered out of a small sports bar. He felt a big hand on his shoulder. "Hey buddy, get your damn hands off me," Evan said as he spun around. Jake Cage raised his hands in protest. "Easy Evan. The whole SFPD has been looking for you." "Why?" "Harvey's been hurt." Evan stood stunned as he tried to find the words to speak. "How..how bad?" Jake shrugged. "Don't know, but you are wanted back as the SIU now!" "Yea, okay. First can we stop by my place?" Jake looked over to Evan. "Sure." Evan slowly got into Jake's truck were he came face to face with a chimp. "Who's this?" Evan asked pointing to him. "That's Bananas. Don't worry about him." Evan simply nodded. "So, like, is Harvey in the hospital?" Jake knew Nash wanted to fill Evan in more on what was going on, but this little bit of info wouldn't hurt. "He is." Evan sat back and he hoped what he had done had nothing to with Harvey being in the hospital. Nash would have done the same thing by taking the money, but now it was time to come clean. Nash would understand. +++ Jake waited outside of Evan's apartment while he ran in. Pulling out his cell phone he called Nash. "Nash." A tired voice answered. "Hey Bridges, I got Cortez and we're heading over to the SIU right after he grabs something from his apartment." "Okay I'll be there in five." "Say Nash, any word on Leek?" "No not yet." "Okay, keep me posted." "Will do Jake." Bananas moved closer to Jake. "What do you want, fur ball?" Bananas rested his head on Jake's arm. "I know. I am worried too." Evan got back into Jake's truck with a bag. "Let's go." +++ Nash walked up to Joe who was sleeping on a nearby couch. "Joe?" Nash asked as he nudged Joe. "What?" Joe asked sitting up. "Nash what's wrong?" Nash sat down next to him. "Jake has Evan and they're on their way to the SIU. I am heading out. I was wondering if you would stay here and wait for any word on Harv?" Joe stretch. "Sure man. Do you want me to call you when I get some news?" "Yeah, please." +++ Evan slowly made his way up to Nash's desk. He could see Nash waiting for him. "You wanted me Boss?" "What the hell are you up to?" Evan looked at Nash then at the bag he was carrying. Evan opened it and dumped the money onto Nash's desk. "I took the money, but for a good reason." Nash glared at him. "And what would that be?" "You know take something from Baptiste, so we could arrest him and his men." Nash held up some of the money. "So all of this was just to get Baptiste?" "Well yeah, you would have done the same." Nash tossed the money down onto his desk trying to remain calm. "No, Evan I wouldn't have." Nash got up and stood nose to nose with Evan. "I would have never put my partner's life in jeopardy like you did." Evan backed off. "What the hell are you talking about?" "Because of your little stunt here, Baptiste and some of his boys broke into Harvey's place and beat the holy hell out of him! Now he's lying in the hospital and due to his injuries he may never be able to return to the SIU! Great idea there, Evan." "Nash I didn't think..." Nash cut Evan off. "That's right you didn't think. I want your gun and your badge." Evan did as he was told. He handed over his badge then his gun to Nash, who set them on his desk. "You're suspended until further notice, now get the hell out of my sight." Evan turned and walked away. +++ Nash started to put the money back into the bag when his phone rang. "Nash." "Nash it’s me." "What’s up Joe?" "I just talked to one of the nurses and she said that Dr. Keller will be coming out to talk to us soon. "Damn. Okay I am on my way over." As Nash left he noticed a few officers watching him. They knew that Nash had done what was right. Evan’s betrayal to Harvey was just one of those things you don’t forget nor forgive. Nash walked past Ronnie. "Hey boss?" "Yeah Ronnie?" "Is Harvey okay?" Nash patted Ronnie on the back. "I don’t know. Say could you do something for me?" "Sure Nash." "Make sure who ever is keeping watch over Harvey keeps Evan away." Ronnie wrote it down. "Okay. Say, Nash are you going to get a restraining order against Evan?" "I was planning on it, but I really have to get to the hospital." "How about I get one drawn up and then deliver it to him?" "Go for it." Nash turned to leave and ran into Cassidy. "Hi Daddy." "Hi daughter, what brings you here, especially this late at night?" Cassidy followed her dad outside. "I wanted you to know I haven’t talked to Evan yet. Has he stopped by?" Nash dug his hands deep into his pockets of his jacket. "He did." "So what’s going on? Joe never really said when he called me. All he said was if Evan showed up to tell him to come to the SIU." "It’s a long story." Cassidy stopped. "Dad what’s going on?" "Get into the car, and I’ll tell you." +++ Nash looked over at Cassidy as they walked down the hall leading to the waiting room were Joe was. "So Evan took the money in hopes that Baptiste would come looking for it? And you didn’t know about this?" "No, and if I did Harvey wouldn’t be in here." Nash answered as he opened the door for Cassidy. Joe sat with his hands clasped, staring at the floor. He'd been that way for the last half-hour. A pair of scrub pants stopped in his line of sight, and Joe looked up to see Harvey's surgeon standing there. The doctor's scrubs were sweat stained and rumpled from the long hours of surgery, but it was his face that Joe scrutinized, looking for a sign of whether the operation had gone well or not. "Inspector Dominguez, is Captain Bridges here?" "No, he's gone for a few hours, but I'll relay anything you tell me." "Very well. There was more severe damage than we'd originally anticipated, but we managed to get everything repaired. There was enough damage and blood loss, however, that the kidney could still fail. We'll keep an eye on his fluid output for the next 24 hours. We'll know more then. I'm sorry I couldn't be more certain of the outcome, but it's really a wait-and-see situation." Swinging between hope and despair, Joe shook the exhausted doctor's hand. "Thanks, Doc. I appreciate what you've done for Harvey." "Just doing my job, Inspector. Good luck to all of you." Watching the doctor walk down the hall, Joe flopped back in his chair. Bowing his head, he said a silent prayer that Harvey would recover and return to the job that he loved. "Joe." Nash called out from down the hall. "Nash you just missed Dr. Keller." Joe answered as he stood up. Nash looked down the hall toward the direction Joe was pointing."What’s going on? How bad is he?" "Nash, there was a lot more damage to his kidney. They are going to watch his fluid output for the next 24 hours." Joe shrugged. "Nash, all it is now is a waiting game." "Okay um..I am going to go talk to Dr. Keller. I’ll be right back." Nash walked quickly down the hall. Cassidy reached her hand out to Joe. "This bad Joe. I have this sick feeling it’s going to get worse before it get better." Joe gave her a small squeeze on the hand. "You got that right." +++ Evan sat starring at his half-full glass of beer. A young bar tender walked up to him. "You okay? You look like you just lost you best friend." "I may have." Evan snorted. The bar tender reached over and picked up his glass. "Let me fill that up for you." Evan just nodded. He didn’t even notice a large figure sit down next to him. "You know drowning your self in that stuff isn’t going to help you." Evan looked over to Jake. "Well lay off, you don’t know what I am going through." Jake laughed. "Oh, the great Evan Cortez is the only one who has ever screwed up. Wake up and smell the coffee Evan." "What the hell is that supposed to mean?" Evan snapped back. Jake leaned over to Evan. "We all screw up. You did something that you thought Nash would have done and it blew up in your face. I want to know what the hell you were trying to prove?" "Jake you wouldn’t understand." "Try me." +++ Nash and Dr. Keller walked into Harvey’s room. A nurse stood over Harvey removing white objects from his face and arm. "Here we are Captain. This is Betty she will be the night nurse on this floor." Keller turned to Betty. "This is Captain Bridges, Inspectors Leek’s boss. If you need me press the call button." Nash cringed as he walked over to Harvey’s bedside. Harvey was black and blue from his forehead to his knuckles. His face and arm were swollen. Nash watched as Betty finished removing the objects from Harvey’s face and arm. "What are those?" Betty smiled at Nash. "They're ice packs. It to help bring the swelling down." Nash chuckled when he saw the tie dyed cast on Harvey’s arm. "You know what he likes." "Yeah, I’ve known Harvey since we were in college together. I used to work at the doctor’s office that Harvey takes his son to." She paused and looked down at him. "It scared me when they brought him in." Nash nodded in agreement. "So when will he wake up?" "I don’t Captain. Maybe sometime tomorrow. I have to run. I’ll be back later to check up on him." She gave Nash a parting smile. Nash pulled up a nearby chair. "Harvey I just don’t know what to say or do. We got a long road a head of us, and it’s not going to be easy." +++ "So that’s why I did what I did Jake." Evan sheepishly admitted. Jake scratched his head. "So all of this was just to impress you family?" "Yeah." "Evan do you honestly think your family would be happy knowing that you put a lot of people's lives in danger? Including your own?" "No, they wouldn’t. I’ve got to make this up to Harvey and Nash." Evan said as he stood up. "I am going to go talk to Nash now." "Jake stood up too. "Hang on there Ev; now is not the time. Go home, get some rest and wait for Nash to get a hold you." Evan hesitated for a minute. "Okay." Jake watched as Evan left the bar. He felt sorry for Evan, a young kid messing up, and giving his record a black eye. But on the other hand he lied to not only Nash, but to everyone around him. +++ Joe and Cassidy walked down to the ICU room were Harvey had been taken to. Cassidy squirmed a little as they reached the door. Joe knocked softly. "Nash?" Nash turned around. "Oh, sorry guys come in. I am forgot you two were still here." "Man they sure worked him over." Joe said as he looked at Harvey. Cassidy walked up next to the bed. She placed her hand on Harvey’s. "Dad I didn’t think it was this bad. I mean I thought maybe just a little black and blue, but…" She broke down before she could finish. Nash got up and comforted her. "Listen to me Cass, he’s going to be fine. It may look bad now but that is still Harvey. Before you know it he’ll be giving you a hard time about being in college, and dating Evan." "What should I do about that one?" Cassidy asked turning back to Harvey. Nash turned to Joe for support. "Um, Cassidy that’s a decision you will have to make." Betty knocked softly before entering the room. "Excuse me Captain, but visiting hours are over." "Thank you Betty." Nash answered. Joe walked up to Nash and Cassidy. "I guess we better go." "Could you guys give me a minute?" Joe looked over to Cassidy. "Sure Nash. Cass shall we?" Cassidy followed Joe out. Nash turned back to Harvey. "Man I hate to leave you like this Harv, but I’ll be back in the morning." Nash gave Harvey a parting squeeze on the shoulder. As Nash walked out Betty was walking back in with fresh dressings. She stopped just in front of Nash. "I’ll keep a close eye on him tonight Captain, go home and try to rest okay?" "I will. Betty you’ll call if there are any changes?" "No problem Captain." ++++ Walking outside Nash pulled out his cell phone, and dialed Joe’s number. "Yo." "Yo, your self Joe. Listen could you and Jake meet me at the SIU in five minutes?" "Sure Nash, what’s up?" "I’ll tell you when we get there." "I am on my. See yeah soon." Nash closed his phone as he headed for the 'Cuda. +++ "Joe this better be good. So what’s going on?" Jake yelled out as he entered the SIU. Joe sipped on his coffee. "I don’t know, wait till Nash get here." "I am here kids." Nash announced as he walked in, and up to Joe and Jake. "Come on lets get some privacy." They headed up to Nash’s desk. "Okay boys this is what we are going to do. Joe I want you to find away to get a hold of Baptiste. When you do, tell him you willing to give back the money Evan took from him." "Then what?" Jake asked. Picking up his phone Nash looked over at Joe and Jake. "Take his ass down." +++ Joe shifted uncomfortably as Jake passed back and for in front of him with a briefcase full of the money. Jake stopped when two cars pulled in. "Here’s our boy." Jake nodded. "Looks like he brought a few friends with him." Baptiste got out and walked up to them. "Glade to see y’all came to your senses. Lets have my money." Jake handed him the money. Baptiste took a quick look at it. "Looks to be all here, I’d hate to knock around another one of the SFPD’s finest." Joe glanced over to Jake. "Just get the hell out of here." Baptiste laughed. "You wish it would be that easy." He pulled a gun on Jake, as did his fellow gang members. "You don’t get it. I have to make a statement to all the people out there. You mess with me, you’re going down." Jake snickered. "Well tell that to the our little gang." Just then other officers and SWAT Team members surrounded them. Joe pulled out his gun. "I am guessing you would like to put your guns down now, and turn around and place your hands on your head right?" Baptiste knew he wouldn’t be going anywhere soon. He and his men quickly gave up. Jake turned to Joe and they were loading Baptiste, into the back of one of the squad cars. "Man I was hoping to kick some ass tonight." Joe smiled slightly. "Yeah me too." +++ Nash and Joe stood outside of Harvey’s hospital room while the doctor gave him a final check up. "So Nash you talk to him about Evan?" Nash kicked at a small piece of fuzz lying on the ground. "I did." "And?" "Joe you know Harvey. He’s hurt that Evan betrayed him, but he wants me to go easy on Evan." Joe looked at Nash confused and frustrated at the same time. "What? Was he drugged up when you spoke to him?" "No, we just had a good talk about everything that has been going on, and some other things." "Like?" Nash looked over to Joe. "That’s between Harv and I." Dr. Keller walked out of Harvey’s room. "Captain Bridges?" "So can we take our boy home?" "You sure can, he’s just finishing getting dressed. But there are a few things you guys should be made aware of. First I don’t want him over doing himself at work. If you see he’s getting tired, make him take it slow. Second I’ve been talking to him one on one about what happened. I think it would be in his best interest that he talks to someone about what he is feeling." "Well he has us." Joe answered. "And he’ll need you, but a therapist will help out too. I contacted your department therapist today and she said that she would start to have some sections with Harvey as soon as he’s up to it." Nash scratched his face. "What does Harvey have to say about this?" "He’s okay with it." Dr. Keller looked at his watch. "I am sorry I have to run. Inspector Leek has his discharge orders, make sure he follows them." He shook Nash hand turned and left. +++ |
