Assembly: 1. Using any stitch you wish, cover the bottom piece (20 x 20 bars) using your light camel/tan color. 2. Pick a side panel. Cover with randomly sized and placed squares and rectangles (see picture). Try to place shapes in an interesting way, making sure to sprinkle the colors around fairly evenly. Use only the dark red, hunter green, medium brown, and light purple to make your shapes. 3. The reserved camel/tan yarn will be used to put the pieces together. Whipstitch the pieces to the bottom piece. Then whipstitch the corners and the top rim. (*When placing the bottom piece on, make sure the rough side faces in so you have a nice, finished bottom.) 4. Decorate the box by hot gluing or stitching on your buttons. |

(*NOTE: The buttons I used do not have button holes. Instead, they have one protruding button hole on the back. To attach these buttons, place them through a plastic canvas hole and secure with hot glue. If the button hole is too big to fit through one hole, the plastic canvas needs to be cut to make room for the protruding hole. If that is that case [as it was for my buttons], cut the holes for the buttons before you begin stitching. When you stitch, make sure you leave the cut areas unstitched, so that the buttons can be put on later. The protruding buttons holes will fit into these cut slits and the button will cover the yarn-bare spot completely. Secure the button in the cut slot by hot gluing it on the back side.) |
For a more finished look: Line the pencil holder with bare plastic canvas or a sheet of plastic to support the holder and protect it from pen and pencil damage. |

More Autumn Leaf Ideas: 1. Make a matching tissue box cover. Use the same thread colors, buttons, and random design technique. Just use the following dimensions for your plastic canvas pieces: - four 31 x 38 bar pieces (sides) - one 31 x 31 bar square (top) *Remember to cut a square for the tissues to come out of (about 12 x 12 bars)! 2. Make a picture frame using these pieces: - four 8 x 48 bar strips Cover the strips using the same autumn leaf technique. Attach the strips at the corners to make a frame. Use plexiglass or glass to protect the picture. Use a piece of stitched plastic canvas on the back. Make it stand up by making a supporting easel piece from plastic canvas and attaching it to the back. |
