June Bugs Designs
Chinese Take-Out Box
Plastic Canvas Pieces (7 mesh):
     - one 20 x 20 bar square (bottom)
     - two 21 x 21 bar squares (sides)
     - two small side panels (see below)
     - two large side panels (see below)
     - two 24 x 14 bar rectangles (top)
     - closures (see below)
Yarn Colors:
     - white (a lot!)
     - red
(* A blue diamond like the one to the right will indicate those pictures that can be clicked to bring up a larger picture.)
For large side panel:

Cut a 20 x 24 bar square.  Begin at the upper left corner of the piece  (making sure the piece is being held so that it is 20 bars high and 24 bars wide).  Count down seven bars and then cut into the canvas by one bar.  Cut that bar off from the rest of the square.  Count down eight bars from your cut and cut in again, removing the bar under that cut.  Repeat on the other side.  The final pattern will be 20 bars wide on the bottom and 24 bars wide on the top, with tapering steps on either side..
For small side panel:

Cut a 15 x 22 bar shape.  Taper it like the large side panel.  Begin at the left corner (making sure it is 15 bars high and 22 bars wide), count down 8 bars, and cut in.  Do the same for the other side.  (*The dashed line in the picture below represents the height of the small side in comparison to the large side).
Gift Ideas:

Fill with fortune cookies, tea bags, or asian looking jewelry!
*This picture represents the side panels.  The dashed line indicates the height of the small side panel.
For top closures:

Cut 2 'L' shapes out of plastic canvas.  These will link together as the top of your box.  The Ls I made are 5 bars wide and 14 bars high at the higest portion.
Assembly:

     1. Cut the 21 x 21 bar squares diagonally to create the triangular side pieces (see project picture above to help understand the placement of these pieces)..

     2.  Cover all pieces using a tent stitch and appropriate designs (see patterns).  Make up your own patterns or leave the patterns off.

     3.  Attach small and large sides to bottom piece, making sure large is across from large and small across from small.

     4.  Attach triangles to the large side panels, making sure they layer over the short side panels and not inside the box.  Thread a piece of yarn through the overlapping triangles and the small side panel to secure the pieces.  (* The sides will buckle a little.  That is normal!)

     5.  Attach top pieces to the large side pieces (not the small ones!).  Attach closure pieces across from each other on the lid pieces, making sure they overlap slightly to create a closure to the box (see above picture of closures).

     6.  Embellish with a piece of wire or thin strip of plastic canvas to make the handle.
