| Plastic Canvas Pieces (7 mesh): - two 4" round pieces - one 6 x 52 bar strip - one 7 x 59 bar strip |
| Yarn Colors: - light purple or lilac - a slightly deeper shade of purple - white (*Use colors of yarn available to you, not just purple!) |

| Hat Base: 1. Using a basic tent stitch, do five circular rows of stitches in your base color (light purple). (This count includes the whipstitch to finish the edge of the round piece. So it is the whipstitch row and four rows of tent stitches). 2. Create a circle from the 6 x 52 bar strip by whipstitching the short edges together. This creates the inner wall of your box. 3. Stitch or hot glue this ring in the center of your base circle (from step 1). There will be a gap between your inner strip circle and your stitch line. This gap is filled in by the lid. 4. Embellish by gluing a small ribbon rose or other trinket on the stitched brim of the hat. |
| Hat Lid: 1. Cut one of the 4 inch circular pieces into a smaller circle. The circle should be about 2 7/8 inches in diameter. It should cover the bare inner portion of the brim piece and fit over the box walls. 2. Using the light purple, fill up this smaller circle with a tent stitch. Leave the outermost bar unstitched for it will be filled in when the side strip is attached to it. (To fill in the middle of the circle where the holes are very small, skip over spots to create a star pattern [see picture below]). 3. Fill in the 7 x 59 bar with the pattern of your choice*. I chose a dark purple and white stripe ribbon pattern. If desired, stitch the entire strip in one color and embellish with real ribbon or trim. (*This strip may have to be slightly altered so it fits correctly around your circle piece. Cut it to fit properly around the circumference of the circle.) 4. Stitch the strip around the circumference of your small circle piece. |
| Embellishment Ideas: - Use real ribbon around the hat. Then add a matching bow. - Line the inside of the box with a matching color fabric. - Create a top hat by increasing the height of the thin strips*. Use black yarn and appropriate embellishments. (*Bars should be altered to 12 x 52 and 15 x 59 to increase the height). |
