Panel Box |
Plastic Canvas Pieces (7 mesh): - one 25 x 25 bar square (bottom) - four 14 x 25 rectangles (sides) - eight 5 x 25 rectangles (top) |
Yarn Colors: These can be what you have on hand or whatever suits your theme. The theme of the piece is discussed later on this page. |
A note on Theming: My intentions with this box were to create a theme on the sides of the box. My inspiration came from decorative buttons and my favorite colors of yarn. Your inspiration may be a piece of fabric, a package of buttons, or your favorite yarn. Another great theme is texture, where you could show off many of the great stitches done on plastic canvas. While the theme is not mandatory, I think it adds a lot to the piece, so think about it.. |
Assembly: 1. Fill in the bottom, 25 x 25 square with the color and stitch of your choice. 2. Fill in the four sides as desired, with a theme if appropriate. 3. Stitch the four side panels around your base, creating an open box. 4. Fill in four of the lid pieces with yarn (just the interior, omitting the finishing stitch at this point). 5. Cut the corners of the other four (see picture) and fill in, again omitting the finishing stitch. |
6. Stitch each uncut piece to one of the corner-cut pieces. What you will have are four pieces, with the rectangle on the bottom and the cut piece on top (taper side up). Please see the pictures ( 1 2 ) for clarification. 7. Stitch these four pieces together to form the lid. By making each lid section two pieces, the lid sections can bend, forming the tapered top and open panel. Now use a finishing stitch to cover up any exposed edges. 8. Embellish the top with fabric, lace, or plain canvas. More panel ideas are given below. Add feet, hinges, tassels, fringe, and other embellishments that compliment your theme. For a hinge to connect the box and top, stitch one of the sides together with yarn or buy a metal hinge and attach with hot glue. |
Ideas for the Center Lid Panel: The beauty of this box is the open lid design. Here are a few ideas to get you going. -Fill it with fabric and batting for a pillowy top (great as a pin cushion for a small sewing box!). - Fit in a small mirror. Works great for a jewelry box! -Use bare, colored plastic canvas, screen, or a bit of lace for an open effect. Great for potpourri! -Use a small chalkboard for a great look! -Or just fill it in with stitched plastic canvas. The possibilities are endless! Have fun! |
*TIP* I lined my box with stiffened felt (sometimes called easy felt), available in most craft stores near the regular felt. The stiffness of the felt made it easy to cut and glue. It also gives the box rigidity and looks very professional. |
Embellishment Ideas: - I added wooden feet to my box. These are eaily found in the craft store. You could also use beads or other found objects for feet as well. - For an elegant latch/handle, try a tassel! - This is a great place to use bits of yarn, ribbon, trim, fringe, or fabric that you can't bear to throw away! |
