Paper Doll |
Plastic Canvas Pieces (7 mesh): - 16 x 38 bar rectangle (to be cut out to form the doll) - various scraps for clothes and accessories |
Yarn Colors: - skin tone - hair color - slip/underwear color - colors for clothing |
*This project is meant to utilize all those scraps of yarn and plastic canvas, so use what you have on hand! |
Assembly: 1. Fill in the doll pattern using the skin, hair, and underwear colors of your choice. 2. Add embellishments to the bare doll. To make long hair, tie strands of yarn to the top of the doll's head. I used a fringe stitch, which worked well. I also made black shoes with straps, to resemble Mary Janes. 3. Modify the doll pattern to create clothing to fit the doll. (Draw out the pattern on a sheet of graph paper. Then draw on that pattern to figure out the shape of the accessory.) Use your imagination! Make shirts, shorts, pants, skirts, dresses, tank tops, Halloween costumes, etc. Make accessories to go with the dolls, like crowns, guitars, wagons, etc. See the next section of the page about attachment of clothing and accessories to the paper doll form. |
Attachment of Clothing/Accessories: 1. Make small "combs" from plastic canvas scraps. Cut them so they are two bars high and a few bars wide (see picture). Hot glue them to the back of your accessory. The comb will penetrate the holes in the paper doll and make the clothing/accessory stick. 2. Put tie strings on each piece and simply tie the accessory around the doll. Great for helping children learn how to tie bows! 3. Use velcro on the doll and each accessory. 4. Attach magnetic strips to the doll and the accessories. What a great way to decorate a refridgerator! |
Or use a combination of these ideas! For example, my blue ballgown (shown in the previous section) has combs but the crown is tied on! |
Want to make this really special? Make a simple plastic canvas box to keep the doll and all her accessories in! Or let the child decorate a shoe box to store it! |
*Personalize it by making clothing you or your child actually has. That way, the doll can match you or your child! |

Here is the basic paper doll form, complete with Mary Jane shoes! |
And here she is ready for the ball, with blue dress and gold tiara! (Notice the Mary Janes popping out from underneath the dress!) |
A close up of the combs on the back of the ball gown. Notice how they are two bars high, with bars trimmed from in between each prong of the comb. |
