...A Day at the Beach
Beat the Heat Beach Trip!
To beat the heat last weekend, I threw a bunch of stuff into my car and jumped in, with the air conditioning and radio blasting classic rock music...  I headed due west through windy roads past the redwood trees to the ocean...where I finally found a little bit of relief.
After passing by San Gregario Beach on Highway 1 and Pampano Beach, which were both super crowded 'cause lots of other people wanted to beat the heat, I found this small beach between the larger state beaches, kind of tucked away.  When I first pulled in and parked and looked down, I didn't think you could even get down to the beach, but then I found that you could walk down this trail and then down these steps...So I ran back to my car, got my back pack, my guitar and my snacks and headed down the trail.
I started to walk down the trail noticing only a few people down at the rocky beach, but I never made it down the steps to the actual beach area because I found the perfect "perch."  That's where I laid down my little towel, and sat down with all of my stuff.  I could feel the cool, salty ocean air and it felt so good after the awful 100 degree heat in Mountain View, Ca.  It never gets that hot in Mountain View -- we usually don't need air conditioning in our second floor apartment, so you can imagine how bad it was for us!  Every single store in the area sold out on fans, air conditioning systems and even ice!  But there I was sitting on my "perch" overlooking the ocean.  From my perch, I could see Pescadero Beach stretched out to the south right beyond this small rocky beach paradise, and look to the right and see another small beach that I doubt anyone could get to.  Above is what I saw looking straight ahead.
Here's where I sat, my perch, where I felt on top of the world...I stayed right here until the sun set into the ocean...  My guitar teacher, Mike Sult, would have been proud of me 'cause I played all kinds of songs that we worked on in class, "Green River," "Wish You Were Here," "In my Life," "Imagine," and even the Green Day song, "Boulevard of Broken Dreams,."  It felt good to play songs and sing sitting there, with the ocean sounds pounding in my ears from all around -- then I played and sang the song my Mom and me used to sing together all the time...

<sing>  I've been to Harlem, I've been to Dover
I've traveled this world all wide over, over, over...
Three times over, drink what you have to drink
and turn your glasses over...
Sailing east, sailing west,
Sailing over the ocean...
You'd better watch out before you bump into the rocks
Or you'll lose your girl in the ocean...!!!!

we'd sing that song at the tops of our lungs while walking down the street in San Francisco...it seemed so fitting to sit here at the ocean singing that song, especially since almost 10 years ago, we scattered my Mom's ashes into the great Pacific ocean...she's out there...in the waves, in the salty ocean breezes, in the tide and the foam...

...as the sun starts to set... I saw pelicans flying overhead!
It was so beautiful at this little beach sitting on my special "perch" that when everyone asked me what I wanted to do for my birthday this year, I said, "let's have a beach party!"   So, it's really gonna happen!  All my kids and their friends and some of my friends are going -- with food, drink, small barbecue grill, drums and guitar...and we'll all meet at this little beach I found and we'll stay until the sun sets into the ocean...
...and the sun slips into the ocean
